        Henry Frederick Lucas-Lucas - British, 1848-1943 Ocean Swell Oil on canvas 23" x 30" Signed, dated 1945 Ocean Swell was by Blue Peter, winner of the 1939 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby and champion sire on three occasions. His dam was Jiffy, whose descendants include Kentucky Derby winners Tomy Lee and Genuine Risk. In 1944 Ocean Swell won the New Derby at Newmarket, the substitute race for the Derby during both world wars. In the latter part of 1944, he captured the Jockey Club Cup and in 1945 won the Ascot Gold Cup. Due to the shuffling of track venues during World War II, Ocean Swell is the only Derby winner to win the Gold Cup at Ascot since Persimmon in 1897.

        HENRY FREDERICK LUCAS-LUCAS (1848-1943), The Tetrarch, portrait study in a stable, O.O.C., signed lower right, inscribed lower left, two year old Tetrarch, by Roi Herod-Vahren foaled 1911, 9in (23cm)h x 11.5in (29.5cm). (1) Tetrarch Foaled at Straffan Station Stud near Ardclough in Co. Kildare and was sired by Roi Herod (France), out of Vahren; dismissed for his colour and having no racing potential, he was sold by his breeder to Major Dermot H. B. McCalmont and placed under the care of a trainer Atty Persse. As a two year old, he entered the track under the jockey Steve Donahue and defeated his competition. He was quickly dubbed the spotted wonder, and won all seven of his 1913 starts. In 1915 he was sent to Thomastown stud in Co. Kilkenny Ireland and was later moved to his own Ballylynch Stud just east of Thomastown. He died on Ballylynch Stud on the 8th of August 1935 at the age of 24.
