JULIÁN LUCAS VILLAMIL (Spain, 1865- ¿). "Traditional portrait of a lady". Oil on panel. It presents restorations on the pictorial surface, breakage in the upper left area, crack in the centre and addition in the lower area.

      Est: €700 - €900

JULIÁN LUCAS VILLAMIL (Spain, 1865- ¿). "Traditional portrait of a lady". Oil on panel. It presents restorations on the pictorial surface, breakage in the upper left area, crack in the centre and addition in the lower area. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 23,5 x 14,5 cm; 33,5 x 24 cm (frame). In this work the artist configures the bsto of a woman, whose clothes and headdress are very reminiscent of the ladies who followed a Goyaesque fashion. The young woman gazes deeply at the viewer with a faint smile on her face in such a way as to create a certain complicity with the observer. Spain in the second half of the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century developed an art with a Romantic, costumbrista heritage and a realistic and meticulous style, which focused on depicting subjects, themes and characters that reflected a new sense of folklore. In this context, painters sought to reflect the types and customs of their own land, which made it different and unique, thus vindicating their own roots and, above all, the traditions and ways of dressing and behaving that were threatened by the notable growth of urban areas and the imposition of new fashions brought in from outside. Art, fundamentally in its pictorial aspect, thus became, in a certain way, a vehicle of expression capable of making regional peculiarities known to the rest of the nation.
