Cosla, Romania By descent in the family to the present owner There is an indistinct inscription on the backing which appears to be a confirmation of the work's authenticity from Jean Alexandru Steriadi. (Frame: 18 1/4 x 12 3/4 inches) There is a 10 inch diagonal repaired tear or break in the board with a corresponding area of inpainting in the upper right quadrant; dirty varnish; frame rubbing, resulting in a few small losses along the edges; 2 inch line of damage at the upper right corner; difficult to detect further restoration through the varnish under UV light.

Er erhielt seine Ausbildung zum Maler an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in München und der Académie Julian in Paris. Luchian gelangte bereits zeit seines Lebens zu grosser Bekanntheit. So war er nicht nur auf vielen wichtigen Kunstausstellungen in seinem Heimatland vertreten, er stellte seine Werke auch auf der Weltausstellung 1900 in Paris, der internationalen Kunstausstellung in Athen 1903 und ab 1905 im Hamburger Kunstverein aus.

Ștefan Luchian, letter to Cecilia Vasilescu, 1898

In 1898, during a project involving the painting of the "Saint Alexander" Cathedral in Alexandria, Ștefan Luchian met Cecilia Vasilescu, the daughter of the mayor of the city at that time. A beautiful love story develops between the two, and the painter opens his soul to her and, in order to spend more time together, becomes her painting teacher. The proof of the love between the two remains preserved in the correspondence they carried during the era. The story could end with the marriage of the young people, but 1898 is also the year in which Luchian's health problem, which was to be identified as multiple sclerosis, appeared for the first time. The following year, in 1899, the painter's health was put to the test again, being a problem to which was added the precarious material condition in which the artist had come to live. So, Cecilia's parents oppose the marriage, and the relationship between the two ends; love had not been enough in their case. However, Cecilia will remain the great love of the artist, something he often mentioned in his correspondence with other contemporary personalities, as well as the being whose refusal caused him the greatest suffering. The text of the letter is drawn up in calligraphic writing, with black ink and spans 6 pages, being dated July 11, 1898 and July 12; at which time Luchian was in Alexandria. The testimony of the feelings between the two is confirmed by the present letter, the artist refers to Cecilia as a child who inspires him "a crushing love" in front of which he feels "small, naive and without resistance". The text written by Luchian also reveals important information related to the feelings he had in the face of his mother's death. The painter presents his feelings openly, even mentioning the fact that the trust he has in Cecilia makes her the only one to whom he revealed himself in this way. We meet a sensitive Luchian, visibly affected by the situations in which life had brought him up to that point, The text of the letter ends with good wishes for the young woman in view of the trip she was going to make to Câmpulung, being signed "Lukian".
