Original American Airlines Poster by Fred Ludekens C1955 Arizona

        Est: $1,500 - $2,000

The Southwestern state of Arizona known for its red cliffs, hot temperatures and desert scenery is perfectly captured in Fred Ludekens' vibrant illustration. The image is a colourful pastiche of all things symbolic of an Arizonian trip, featuring a couple horseback riding through large and plentiful cacti, looking onward at the cliffs and inviting space around them. American Airlines is a major airline based in Fort Worth, Texas. The company was founded in 1926 as a union of more than eighty small airlines and is the world's largest airline. American Airlines is a founding member of Oneworld Alliance, the largest airline alliance in the world. Through this partnership they are able to coordinate fares and services with Airlines around the world. In 2001, they acquired the well-known TWA. They still operate today out of ten major hubs in the United States. Fred Ludekens (1900-1982) began his career as billboard painter before joining the Lord and Thomas advertising agency in 1931. Ludekens worked in a variety of media, and specialized in landscapes. He produced artwork and covers for all the major magazines of the time. He was a member of the founding faculty for the Famous Artists School, an art correspondence course founded by Norman Rockwell and other members of the New York Society of Illustrators. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

FRED LUDEKENS (1900-1982) THE SALAD BOWL / SOUTHERN PACIFIC. 1930. 23x16 inches, 58 1/2x40 3/4 cm. Condition B+ / A-: slight foxing in margins and text; minor creases and abrasions in margins and image. Paper. In addition to changing the way Americans traveled, the railways also affected the way America ate. It was the Southern Pacific Railroad that originated the "salad bowl" in the late 1920s, a "help yourself, all-you-could-eat" scenario, in their dining cars. The railroad promoted this feature ubiquitously in magazine advertisements, on matchbooks and even on extraneous cards (substitute jokers) in decks of Southern Pacific playing cards, but this is the only poster to boast of this historic culinary innovation. Train buffs will also appreciate the detail of the colorful hues of the table cloth, a feature on Southern Pacific trains such as the Sunset Limited. Ludekens was a prominent California illustrator who was the art director at Lord and Thomas, the firm which handled Southern Pacific's advertising. He designed a number of posters for the railroad.

The GS-2 locomotive (pictured here) was put into service in 1937; it was the first of its kind to bear the iconic red and orange color scheme.
