        This rare and striking hand-colored oology engraving is from Adam Ludwig Wirsing's Sammlung von Nestern und Eyern verschiedener Vögel or Collection of nests and eggs of various birds. The work was published in Nuremberg by Wirsing between 1767 and 1786. The original hand-coloring is truly remarkable and fresh. Adam Ludwig Wirsing (1734-1798) was a German engraver, publisher, and art dealer. He had a special interest in natural history.         Marble.- Wirsing (Adam Ludwig) Marmora et adfines aliquos lapides coloribus suis exprimi...; Abbildungen der Marmor-Arten und einiger verwandten Steine nach der Natur auf das sorgfältigste mit Farben..., first edition, title and text in Latin and German, 68 fine hand-coloured engraved plates featuring 387 specimens of marble, occasional soiling or marginal staining to plates, light browning to text, contemporary half calf, rubbed, corners worn, rebacked, small folio, Nuremberg, 1775. ⁂ Good copy of the uncommon first edition with beautifully hand-coloured plates showing almost 400 numbered cross-sections of marble and other stones from quarries in western Europe, mainly Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Because the work was published in parts, the quantity of plates varies: Brunet calls for a maximum of 98 plates but not many copies contain more than 68, as here, and most considerably fewer. The work was reissued by Sepp the following year.
