Bilder in Düsseldorf" Edward von Steinle was an Austrian painter of the 19th century, a pupil of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and stayed in Rome from 1828 to 1834, where he associated with Friedrich Overbeck and Philipp Veit; in 1850 first professor at the Städel Institute. He created numerous mostly religious easel paintings but also portraits and romantic genre paintings. He also made a large number of drawings and watercolours, most of them with a romantic touch, which he had acquired through his contact with Clemens Brentano. 1839 he moved to Frankfurt am Main and joined the Nazarene circle around Veit.       Freundschaftsbildnis des Malers Friedrich August Ludy (1823-1896). Öl auf Leinwand, auf Holztafel montiert. 29,8 x 23,3 cm. Unten rechts signiert "C. Hübner D(üsseldorf)", verso auf einem alten Klebeetikett mit Feder in Schwarz bezeichnet "Friedrich August Ludy / geb. 1823 Köln". Um 1840. Carl Wilhelm Hübner kam im Jahre 1837 von Königsberg nach Düsseldorf, um dort unter C. F. Sohn und Wilhelm von Schadow zu studieren. Dort lernte er auch seinen Studienfreund, den Kupferstecher Friedrich August Ludy kennen, der zuerst ab 1839 mit Hübner unter Schadow studierte, später aber zu Josef Kellers Klasse wechselte. Ludy machte sich unter anderem durch die meisterliche Übertragung von Zeichnungen Friedrich Overbecks in die Graphik einen Namen und war einer der Mitbegründer der Künstlervereinigung Malkasten. Sein Bildnis ist uns heute bisher nur durch ein Gemälde von Ludwig Knaus' aus dem Jahre 1850 bekannt (heute im Malkasten-Archiv; Inv.Nr. B-K 135-7910). In vorliegendem Gemälde stellt der noch junge Künstler eben jenen Studienfreund in jungen Jahren mit modisch zur Seite gekämmter Scheitellocke dar. Der Einfluss seines Lehrers Wilhelm von Schadow auf die Portraitauffassung des jungen Künstlers ist in dem mit viel Sympathie für das Modell ausgeführten Freundschaftsbildnis deutlich spürbar. - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.
