A painter, illustrator, and commercial artist, Lübbert studied at the Berlin Academy of Arts and performed the majority of his work in Berlin for the Ernst Marx publishing house. As well as contributing illustrations to humor magazines such as Berliner Illustrierte, Deutsche Illustrierte, and Ulk (which translates literally as “Fun”), he executed a number of designs for the Cardinal cigarette manufacturers, including a series of poster stamps.         27 3/4x37 1/2 inches. Ernst Marx, Berlin. Condition A. This is an archetypical Berlin poster from the period before WWI, when the prevailing style of advertising entailed daring composition, no outlining and, extra clean typography. At the time the wealthy city had many attractive evening venues and night clubs that would advertise largely through posters. This poster, in fact, is Lautrec's Moulin Rouge in reverse, with the dark mass of spectators in the foreground and a pastel-colored view of the dance floor in the background. A fine example of the elegant, voyeuristic feeling that would have pervaded such establishments. Lubbert's best poster. DFP III 2135, Maitres 1900 p. 170.

        26 1/4x37 1/4 inches. Ernst Marx, Berlin. Condition A-: repaired tears and restoration in top margin. Lübbert was a prolific poster designer in Berlin who died during the First World War. While he may not have had the humor of Klinger, nor the power of Erdt nor the elegance of Deutsch, he was an accomplished graphic designer all the same, and his best creations, like this one, have definite style. To advertise this milliner, who also sells feathers and flowers for their hats, Lübbert clearly and efficiently portrays two women's heads; one in profile, and the other wearing a hat and an extravagant feather seductively watching us.
