          King Luis I of Portugal (1838 - 1889) - 20 pieces of cutlery from the royal silverware, circa 1860 - 1870

          Silver, steel blades. Ten dining forks and ten knives, the handles and stems decorated en suite with double ribbed trims and raised "L" mirror monogram surmounted by the royal Portuguese crown. The (partially slightly spotted) knife blades stamped with the maker's mark "Veyrat A Paris" (partially overpolished) and on the blades illegible monogram mark. The blades with the jeweller's mark "Veyrat" within a lozenge and French export mark from 1840-78 in the form of a head. Length of knives 27 cm, overall weight 1,213 g. Length of forks 20.5 cm, weight 889 g. Luis I of the House of Saxony-Coburg-Gotha, second son of Queen Marie II and Ferdinand II, ascended the throne in 1861 after the early death of his brother King Peter V, his son Carlos from the marriage with Princess Maria Pia of Savoy, daughter of King Vittorio Emanuele II of Italy, succeeds him after his death in 1889 as Dom Carlos I. Luis´, one page, folio, Palacio da Ajuda, Lisbon, 5th January 1878, to Cardinal Bilio, in Portuguese. The King thanks his correspondent for his Christmas greeting letter and forwards his best wishes stating in part `I received with great pleasure the letter in which Your Eminence wishes me well on the occasion of the festivity of the Holy Nativity, and very sensible to this proof of interest in my person´ With address leaf, bearing a paper seal affixed, addressed to Illustrissimo e reverendisso em Christo Padre Cardeal Bilio..´ Small minor creasing to the upper edge. A caricature of Manuel Inocencio Liberato dos Santos Carvalho e Silva (1802 -1887), Court composer and organist at the Royal Chapel as well as music teatcher of the then Infant Dom Luis and of his brothers. Most sherished by the Court, Queen Maria II donated him the Boisselot piano used by Franz Lizt during his performances in Lisbon. Nowadays this piano belongs to the "Museum of Music". On the foreground D. Francisco Antonio de Jesus Maria Xavier de Sales de Melo Breyner, 2.º Conde de Mafra.           LUIS I: (1838-1889) King of Portugal 1861-89. L.S., Luis, one page, folio, Palace of Ajuda, 5th January 1878, to Prince Orsini, in Portuguese. The manuscript letter thanks his correspondent for their greetings 'for the Feast of Christmas' adding that they are 'obvious proof of the kind interest you take in my person.' In concluding the King wishes the Prince 'a thousand fortunes, and hope for many future occasions when I can bring you happiness.' Together with a similar L.S., Maria Pia, by Maria Pia of Savoy (1847-1911, Portuguese Queen Consort 1862-89, wife of King Luis I), one page, folio, Palace of Ajuda, 5th January 1878, also to Prince Orsini, thanking them for their Christmas greetings and remarking 'I assure you that, for my part, I sincerely hope that divine providence will accord you all the prosperity your distinguished merit deserves.' Both letters with blank integral leaf and one accompanied by the original envelope bearing a red wax seal to the verso. VG, 2
