ALEXANDRA LUKEUNTITLED COMPOSITION, 1957oil on boardsigned 20 ins x 24 ins; 50.8 cms x 61 cms Provenance:Private Collection, WhitbyAlexandra Luke (1901-1967) was one of two women artist members of the Painters 11. Factually, her contribution was eclipsed by the more flamboyant male members of the group but the consistently high quality of her work as evidenced by this Untitled Composition from 1957 suggests a reassessment is due.Luke was on the ground floor of many of the significant developments in the history of Abstract painting in Canada. She studied with Jock Macdonald at the Banff School of Fine Arts in 1945. It was at that time that Macdonald was experimenting with his exquisite abstracted watercolours motivated by the technique of Automatic Surrealism. Essentially the idea was to commence mark-making without forethought concerning either subject matter or pre-planned compositions. Each successive stroke called forth a countervailing, complimentary, offsetting reaction until the work was, intuitively, judged complete. Luke employed this progressive new technique. From 1947 to 1951, she attended summer courses at the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts in Provincetown, Massachusetts. In 1952 she held her first solo exhibition at the Picture Loan Society in Toronto. In 1952, she organized the Canadian Abstract Exhibition and was invited to participate in the ground-breaking fall 1953 exhibition Abstracts at Home at the Simpson's downtown store in Toronto. In October 1953, she banded together with this core group of exhibitors along with others to form Painters 11. In 1953 she had the honour of exhibiting at the prestigious Martha Jackson Gallery, NY (who exhibited Borduas commencing that year until his death). Naturally, Luke participated in all the major Painters 11 exhibitions: Roberts Gallery 1954, Riverside Art Museum, NY 1956 and Park Gallery 1957. She was a driving force in the push to establish abstraction in Toronto. Estimate: $5,000–7,000

By the mid-40s she realized a desire for more advanced training and enrolled in summer school at the Banff School of Fine Arts where she met Jock Macdonald (see lot 99), who would become a lifelong friend. Luke is credited with first bringing together many of the artists who would form the Painters 11 when she developed an exhibition of abstract paintings in Oshawa in 1952.Estimate: $5,000–7,000

(Jock) Macdonald. She wrote, "'In his interesting talks [he] relates today's architecture, science, physics and art expressions to the problems of spacetime.' He encouraged her to create 'from within with no relation to natural forms.'" Her notes from her time at Banff School of Fine Art include references to Kandinsky, Surrealism, E.E. Cummings and Gertrude Stein, as well as advice about colour and colour symbolism. Macdonald gave her the answer to Why Abstract? "'He makes one see clearly what a very deep and searching problem it is.'" She organized the first Canadian all-abstract show - The Canadian Abstract Exhibition from which The Painters Eleven grew.

ALEXANDRA LUKECOMPOSITION, 1964, watercolour and crayon on paper; signed 21.75 ins x 30 ins; 54.4 cms x 75 cms $3,000-4,000Provenance: The Estate of Margaret Ferguson, North York.Private Collection, Ontario.Note: One of the mediums which Alexandra Luke used with amazing force was watercolour, employed either in the pure state or combined inventively with ink or collage elements, such as Japanese rice paper, fabric or even birch bark. One of her watercolours from 1964, the same year that this work of art was completed, is titled "Adventure," a title which Luke used repeatedly but which seems to apply with special relevance to the paintings she created during her last decade. The composition of this painting is more loose and abstractly handled than in many of the artist's other watercolour work, where Luke would use a sort of grid, within which she placed blocks of colour. A strong playful element is often present in Luke's work and is evident within "Composition, 1964." The painter allows the watercolour to form pools of color which she interrupts with a delicate black line that seems to melt into the paper. Several other works from 1964 have related titles such as "Composition in Blue and Yellow" or "Red Composition." In each of these works Luke experimented with colour, composition, and space dimensions, as Hans Hofmann had suggested she do, urging the artist towards a freedom and spontaneity within her work. However, the unusually large size of "Composition, 1964" suggests its importance in her oeuvre - only about three other works of this approximate size are known, all dating from the period between 1963 and 1965.We would like to thank art historian, Joan Murray, for providing information for the foregoing essay.

Watson, Alexandra Luke: A Tribute, Robert McLaughlin Gallery, 1977, described page 27 Provenance:Here & Now Gallery, Toronto Private Estate, Toronto Exhibited:Here & Now Art Gallery, Toronto, Alexandra Luke: New Paintings, 1961 Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa, Alexandra Luke: A Tribute, July 6 - August 7, 1977, catalogue #14 Alexandra Luke executed Epitaph to Eos in 1961, shortly after the formal disbandment of Painters Eleven in 1960. This work was acquired from the Here & Now Gallery, which at the time was run by the dynamic Toronto dealer Dorothy Cameron. In this lovely piece, Luke created her own homage to the myth of Eos through her unique painterly strengths and sensitivities. In Greek mythology, Eos is the goddess of dawn who opened the gates of heaven with her rosy fingers and golden arms, driving through the sky in her yellow chariot. Characteristic of her late 1950s and early 1960s work, Epitaph to Eos features delicate calligraphic brush-strokes whilst details of the myth are emoted through her warm colour palette. Furthermore, Luke was greatly inspired by the teachings of American Hans Hofmann, having studied under him for four summers between 1947 and 1952. Hofmann strongly believed in the importance of movement in abstract painting and Luke absolutely absorbed this. The viewer can feel the motion in this work as the balmy areas of colour float across the background, evoking Eos driving through the sky.

Exhibited: Painters 11, Roberts Gallery, Toronto, February 13-27, 1954. Alexandra Luke, Robertson Gallery, Ottawa, March, 1954. Alexandra Luke, Eglinton Gallery, Toronto, Januray 14 - February 9, 1956. Alexandra Luke, Heliconian Club, Toronto, October, 1968, no.7. Literature: "To Disagree Harmoniously - Object of 'Painters Eleven'", The Globe and Mail, Toronto, February 13, 1954, page 16. "One Man Shows, Lesson: Don't Discount Consumer", The Globe and Mail, Toronto, January 22, 1955, page 10. Note: Alexandra Luke was a key figure in the abstract painting movement in Canada and particularly in the group known as Painters Eleven (1953-1960), in which she was a member. Working and showing their work together, Painters Eleven developed a highly energized and intriguing interaction, which brought out the best in the art of many of its members. Luke's inclusion of The Cloister in the first show of Painters Eleven at Roberts Gallery in 1954 suggests its importance to her and to the burgeoning abstract movement: it is a keynote work of the Eleven and a cornerstone to her oeuvre. It is an almost unique offering for the artist, one which combines a sense of what painting meant to her with an indication of what looks like exceptional foreknowledge on her part of a much later painting movement, that of post-modernism. Both aspects can be deduced from the detail of a monk on a balcony at night in the upper right corner. It sets the tone for the way Luke approached painting - as an acolyte seeking wisdom - and for the meaning of painting to her, as a way of achieving spiritual peace within an excitingly urban world. The painting is related to a painting in the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, Untitled, (oil on canvas, 97 x 84 cm, c. 1951, purchased in 1993,no. 36833), however The Cloister is much more harmoniously realized and sophisticated in its approach. Its muted palette and lively surface reflect Luke's orientation towards the Abstract Expressionist movement in New York. Luke, influenced by Hans Hofmann, her teacher, held that colour in itself determined painting structure, that plastic values were the sole content of a work, that painting's medium is the flat canvas. Luke felt she could create depth through vibrant juxtapositions of painting elements. As in other of her works, her subject here involves energy in the form of movement, growth, an expansive rhythm, even perhaps a spray of sound. In The Cloister, the artist has depicted the urban scene and the place of the solitary artist within it with adventurousness. "A combination of earthy sights and ideas," Pearl McCarthy called it, in the Globe & Mail, February 13, 1954. We would like to thank art historian, Joan Murray, for contributing the foregoing essay.
