Theodore Nicolai Lukits American, 1897-1992 Idle Hour, circa 1918

        Est: $15,000 - $25,000

Theodore Nicolai Lukits American, 1897-1992 Idle Hour, circa 1918 Signed Theo Nicolai Lukits (lr); titled, inscribed and possibly dated 1918 on the reverse Oil on canvas 40 x 38 1/4 inches Provenance: The artist Beverly Wilshire Gallery, Beverly Hills, California, 1980 Edenhurst Gallery Fine Art, Palm Desert, California Private collection, Washington, D.C. Exhibited: Los Angeles, California, Painters and Sculptors of Southern California, 1926 Montmartre Gallery, Los Angeles, Annual Winter Exhibition, 1926 Literature: Art and Antiques, October 2002, p. 19 A child prodigy, Theodore Nicolai Lukits began formal studies at the Washington University School of Fine Arts before his twelfth birthday. At the age of fifteen, he progressed to the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, studying with Victor Higgins, Richard Emil Miller, and Edwin H. Blashfield. Enrolling at the Art Institute of Chicago, he worked with Charles Webster Hawthorne and George Bellows, and won several awards and honors during his tenure, including the Prix de Rome. Returning for post-graduate study, Lukits received a scholarship to study with Alphonse Mucha, the Czech master of Art Nouveau, who was in the United States accompanying an exhibition of his masterful series of twenty paintings, The Slav Epic. In October 1918, Lukits was featured as artist of the month in an article in The Republic Item. [pp. 21-22] The unidentified author wrote of Lukits' early interest in piano, which he studied for five years, describing his interest in creating "beautiful things, sometimes finding expression in sound, sometimes in color, until, in his mind, there came to be a definite connection between the two modes of expression; until now colors come to him through the harmonies of sound and musical harmonies are awakened by the blending of colors." The writer continued to praise "the riot of joyous color, [and] a harmony of composition" in Lukits' work. The present painting is considered one of the artist's masterworks. Faintly inscribed on the reverse with what appears to be the date of 1918, it relates to other early subjects dating from Lukits' years at the Art Institute, when he often depicted women in contemplative modes. A pearlescent nude emerges from a muted background of deep green and persimmon, her arms enveloped in a loosely woven wrap of fuschia and teal. Brilliant hues throughout the composition attest to Lukits' facility with color. The pagoda at left reflects the artist's fascination with Asian art and antiquities that he began collecting during his years in Chicago; he often incorporated screens and other artifacts into his still life compositions. Idle Hour was widely exhibited in the 1920s; Vose Galleries of Boston priced it at $5,000. Lukits and Frank Tenney Johnson were the only West Coat painters represented by the gallery in the 1920s and 1930s. When the young painter moved to Los Angeles in 1922, he established the Lukits Academy of Fine Art, which he ran for sixty-five years, eschewing contemporary art movements and creating portraits and landscapes that differ utterly in character from the extraordinary compositions of his youth. A former student reminisced about the subtlety of Lukits' color - and of the difficulty in photographing them: "If you've ever seen a real Lukits painting, you'll know that more than any other artist I've ever known, photography does not do the work justice. Lukits was well aware of the fact that his paintings contained so many subtleties that would never come across in even the finest photograph - especially regarding color - and he was adamant about not allowing his pictures to be photographed. If it was absolutely necessary, then he insisted on black and white reproductions."
