BERTHA LUM (American, 1869-1954) Dancing Figures 1924 raised line print signed and dated lower left: Bertha Lum '24 titled on label verso 52.5 x 35cm OTHER NOTES: Whilst living in Peking in 1922 Bertha Lum developed a new technique for printing, often referred to as a raised line print, which involved moulding wet paper over a carved wooden block. After the paper dried she would then handpaint the embossed paper using the raised lines to delineate the areas of colours. According to her daughter, Eleanor "Peter" Lum Crowe, this was an old Chinese technique that Lum adapted for her own use.
