        FLORENCE LUNDBORG (1871-1949) THE LARK / FEBRUARY. 1897. 24 1/4x13 inches, 61 1/2x33 cm. Condition B+: slight offsetting in right image; minor creases at edges; unobtrusive repaired pin holes in corners; colors attenuated. One of the most prominent female artists working in the poster field at the turn-of-the century, Lundborg's work was prized by her contemporaries. Scotson-Clark writes in The Poster in November 1900 that Lundborg "deserves all praise . . . A complete set of The Lark advertisements is a very desirable possession." And Brietenbach contends that The Lark posters "rank among the best the American poster movement produced" (The American Poster p. 17). The Lark was published from May 1895 to April 1897. Florence Lundborg, a San Francisco native, was a painter and book illustrator. A student of the California Arts and Crafts Movement, Lundborg designed a total of seven woodblock posters for The Lark, of which this was the first. For each of her posters, in true artisan fashion, she carved all the blocks herself. The Poster, April 1896, describes the paper used for the poster as "a very interesting bamboo fibre paper used in the Chinese drugstores in San Francisco."         Florence Lundborg (CA, 1871-1949), Mountain Goats, oil on canvas, signed lower right "Florence Lundborg," unframed. Florence Lundborg was born in San Francisco in 1871. She began her art studies with Arthur Mathew, an American tonalist who greatly influenced numerous California and western artists of the late 19th and early 20th century. Following her studies with Mathew, Lundborg traveled to Paris where she continued under the tutelage of Whistler. After returning to San Francisco, she won a bronze medal at the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition for her mural work. 50" x 40"

        24x13 7/8 inches. Condition B+: restored losses and overpainting in bottom corners; losses in top corners; repaired tears through margins; abrasions in image. Florence Lundborg, a San Francisco native, was a painter and book illustrator in addition to being a poster artist. Just after the turn-of-the-century she studied art in Paris with James Whistler and then, in 1915, she designed a series of murals for the California Building at the Panama-Pacific Exhibition, for which she received a bronze medal. Her murals also adorn several buildings in New York and Brooklyn. A student of the California Arts and Crafts movement, Lundborg designed a total of 7 woodblock posters for The Lark, believing that woodblock prints had "more of the personality of their inventor than the mechanically produced lithograph [could] possibly have" (posters American style p. 168). For each of her posters, in true artisan fashion, she carved all the blocks herself. Kiehl 120, Margolin p. 133, not in DFP I.
