Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "U.S.S. Massachusetts" Signed lower right. Original Oil on Masonite painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting appeared on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the U.S.S. Massachusetts. The U.S.S. Massachusetts was one of the most celebrated U.S. ships of World War II. Commissioned on 12 May 1942 with Captain Francis E.M. Whiting in command, "Big Mamie" was among the first American ships fitted with 16-inch guns. She first served with the Western Naval Task Force during the invasion of North Africa as flagship for Admiral H. Kent Hewit. While steaming off Casablanca on the morning of 8 November 1942, she encountered the Axis French battleship Jean Bart. Jean Bart immediately opened fire. U.S.S. Massachusetts returned the Bart's fire, thus becoming the first U.S. ship to fire 16-inch shells against the Axis Powers. Across the grey morning sea, the battleships exchanged volleys, minutes later the Jean Bart's guns were silent. U.S.S. Massachusetts then turned her guns on a complement of enemy destroyers which had joined the fight, sinking two of them. After the Axis French government agreed to a cease-fire, the U.S.S. Massachusetts returned to the States to prepare for Pacific duty. She arrived in the Pacific on 4 March 1943. As the U.S. Navy drove across the Pacific in its "island hopping" campaign, the U.S.S. Massachusetts was part of the action. She fought at Kwajalein, Truk, Saipan, Guam, Leyte Gulf, Okinawa and Iwo Jima. For her action in World War II, U.S.S. Massachusetts received eleven battle stars. Image Size: 13.5 x 15.75 in. Overall Size: 20.5 x 21.75 in. Unframed. (B10677)

            Charles J Lundgren (1911 - 1988) "U.S.S. Georgia"

            Est: $100 - $1,000

Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "U.S.S. Georgia" Signed lower right. Original First Day Cover oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting appeared on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the U.S.S. Georgia. The U.S.S. Georgia received her commission on 24 September 1906 with Captain R.G. Davenport in command. Her first tour of duty made her the flagship for the Atlantic Fleet Division 2, Squadron 1. After completing gunnery practice off Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, she joined the rest of the Atlantic Fleet at the Jamestown Exposition on 10 June 1907, and passed in review of President Theodore Roosevelt, who proclaimed 11 June Georgia Day. Then, the U.S.S. Georgia sailed with the Fleet for target practice. During these drills, a powder charge ignited prematurely in her aft 8-inch turret, killing 10 officers and men. Repaired and refitted in a matter of weeks, the powerful battleship participated in the tercentenary of the landing of the first English Colonists 16-21 August, 1907. Perhaps U.S.S. Georgia's proudest moment came on 16 December 1907 as she passed in review of President Roosevelt along with fifteen other battleships, a torpedo squadron and transport vessels. This was the great naval review preceding the cruise of the Atlantic Fleet to the west coast. This first leg of the "Great White Fleet" received international acclaim and stirred the hearts of the American people. The onset of World War I found the U.S.S. Georgia in American waters running training and gunnery exercises. She was reassigned to the 3rd Division, Battleship Force as an escort vessel, and, at War's end, she was attached to the Cruiser and Transport Force. Image Size: 13.5 x 15.5 in. Overall Size: 20.75 x 21.75 in. Unframed. (B09712)

It is the evocation of salt and tar, wind and sail, the light, the movement of water ... the affinity of man and sea. As an experienced yachtsman, historian of the sea, as well as an acclaimed marine artist, Charles Lundgren captured this complex harmony in his paintings.Looking every bit the part of the ancient mariner, himself, Lundgren's love and respect for deep water was reflected in every painting. Combined with his consummate skill as an artist, this resulted in marine painting at its finest. Study at the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (Parsons), the Paris School of Fine and Applied Art, as well as schools in Germany and Italy, plus extensive travel throughout Europe and Africa enabled Lundgren to develop his talents and perfect his technique. One art critic praised him with these words: "He is, in my eyes, much more than a painter of the sea. He is a believer in it. A historian of the days when men reached new continents by sail and stars alone." Lundgren's painting skills were sought by individuals - he often painted "portraits" of the boats and ships owned by the rich and the famous - as well as museums and companies. Not suprisingly, his works were acquired for such collections of Huntington Hartford, J.P. Morgan, Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower, John Wayne, Pegeen Fitzgerald, Cornelius Walsh, George Jensen and Eric Sloane.

No visible inpaint under UV light. SIGHT SIZE: 20 x 19 inches / 50 x 48 cm BOARD SIZE: 26 x 24 inches / 66 x 60 cm SIGNATURE: lower right NOTE: This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 20c Roanoke Voyages stamp issued July 13, 1984. On December 13, 1577, Francis Drake set sail from Plymouth Sound, England, on a daring three year odyssey that would take him into oceans hitherto explored only by the Spanish. Drake and about 160 men ventured forth in five vessels: the flagship the Pelican (which he later renamed the Golden Hind), the Elizabeth, the Marigold and the supply ships Swan and Benedict. Of the five, only the Golden Hind and a crew of about fifty men completed the voyage. After safely passing through violent storms in the Strait of Magellan, Drake raided Spanish settlements along the west coast of South America. Drake captured two vessels with cargoes of gold, silver and jewels that were so heavy, they caused the Golden Hind to sail below her watermark. Continuing northward, Drake sighted what is now Canada's west coast. But bitter cold forced him to turn back, and he set a course south and Islands), where he negotiated a treaty with the local sultan. From Java to Sierra Leone on the Cape of Good Hope -- 9,700 miles -- Drake sailed without a port of call or a stop for maintenance, for it had been nearly three years since the voyage had begun. Upon his return to England in September of 1580, he was greeted as a national hero. Queen Elizabeth I came on board his ship to knight him Sir Francis Drake. His fortune and reputation as a brilliant navigator were made -- and the way was opened for England to become a global seapower. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. The wooden steam frigate U.S.S. Minnesota served with distinction as the flagship of the Union's Atlantic Blockading Squadron during the Civil War. Originally commissioned on 21 May 1857 with Captain S.F. Dupont in command, the U.S.S. Minnesota began her career as a member of the East India Squadron. She carried U.S. Minister to China William B. Reed to the Treaty Conference in China and returned him home, arriving in Boston Navy Yard 2 June 1859. She was then decommissioned and remained in Boston until the outbreak of the Civil War. The U.S.S. Minnesota was recommissioned 2 May 1861 with Captain G.J. Van Brunt in command. As flagship of the Atlantic Blockading Squadron, U.S.S. Minnesota had achieved lasting fame on 14 May 1861 off Hampton Roads, Virginia. That day, she captured three Confederate Schooners laden with supplies. The Mary Willis, Delaware Farmer and Emily Ann, were all taken. During the next five weeks, the U.S.S. Minnesota went on to capture the barks Winfred and Sally Ann as well as the Mary Warick and the schooner Sally Mears. In August of 1861, she participated in the Army-Navy expedition against the Confederate forts at Hatteras Inlet, North Carolina. Barely six months later, the U.S.S. Minnesota was grounded as she engaged a number of Confederate warships off Newport News. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation NAME VARIANTS: Charles Lurdgren CATEGORY: antique vintage painting AD: ART CONSIGNMENTS WANTED. CONTACT US SKU#: 117354 US Shipping $60 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: Fine marine painting is much more than the illustration of ship and water.

By far the largest square-rigger of our time, the Sedov shadows even the massive Kruzenshtern. This monumental four-masted bark stretches a full 388 ft., has a net tonnage of 3,516, and can reach and maintain speeds of up to 15 knots with over 4,611 square feet of sail embracing the wind. The Sedov is owned by the Ministry of Fisheries of the U.S.S.R. and bears the name of the famous Russian polar explorer George Sedov. She was built by the renowned Krupp shipyard in Kiel, Germany, and commissioned on September 19, 1921. For several years thereafter, she carried bulk cargo between ports of Europe, Australia, South America, and the Pacific. In 1936, the Magdalene Vinnen, as she was then called, was sold to the North German Lloyd. Under her new owner, she was fitted with accommodations for ninety German cadets and thus began her new life as a training vessel. In 1946, she was taken over by the Soviet fleet, renamed the Sedov, and used for combined oceanographic and training purposes. This magnificent square-rigger is presently being completely refitted specifically for cadet training purposes. Sea specialists and seamen throughout the world are looking forward to the return of this unique and largest of square-riggers of our time. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. Through the ages, man with his ingenuity and his courage has striven to fashion new and better sailing ships in order to conquer the vast unknowns of the sea. The majestic Tovarisch is in itself one of the finest tributes ever to man's centuries-old shipbuilding achievements. This sail-clad beauty, with long, graceful lines and three tall masts, was built in 1933 in Hamburg, Germany by Blahm and Voss as a training vessel for the German Navy. A heavily canvassed bark of 226 feet and 1,309 tons, she was christened the Gorch Fock and designed to reach and maintain speeds of up to 16 knots with over 6,100 square feet of sail. At the close of World War II she was sunk by Nazi Germany near Swinemunde; though shortly thereafter, she was raised and claimed as war reparation by the Soviet Union. In 1951 after extensive repairs and refitting, she resumed her voyages on the high seas, only this time with future Soviet officers on board and with a new name ... the Tovarisch(Russian for "Comrade"). Many of today's Soviet sea captains began as fledgling cadets aboard this famous sailing ship. Thus, in keeping with grand tradition, the mighty Tovarisch continues to ply the waves and train new generations of young cadets in the ways of the sea for the Soviet Merchant Marine.

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the USSR 32k Sedov stamp issued September 18, 1981. Image Size: 19.25 x 21.75 in. Overall Size: 25 x 27 in. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood Proofcard for the Great Britain Maritime stamps issued June 16, 1982. On July 19, 1545, King Henry VIII and his court festively gathered on the northeast corner of the Isle of Wight to watch the English fleet, including the Mary Rose, sail into battle against an invading French navy just offshore. Just after midday the Mary Rose advanced on four leading French galleys. The sea was calm and Henry VIII's prized flagship bored on toward her enemy. But, suddenly, tragedy struck. The Mary Rose heeled over and quickly sank. Most of the crew of the doomed ship of over 715 men drowned in full view of the aghast King and his court. An official English inquiry determined that panic occurred among the inexperienced crew of the Mary Rose when a sudden strong gust of wind hit the ship as the sails were being hoisted. According to the inquiry, a clumsy tack and a sharp heel allowed tons of murky water to pour through the open gun ports and carry the H.M.S. Mary Rose and her terrified crew fifty feet down to a watery grave. The French historian, du Bellay, tells a different story: "Fortune favored our fleet ... among other damages which the English received, the 'Mary Rose,' one of their principal ships, was sunk by our cannon, and of the hundreds of men which were on board, only five and thirty escaped." Whether the Mary Rose sank from French gunfire or as the result of mishandling by her crew remained as much a mystery to the King as it does to us, over four centuries later. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. La Dauphine is the ship in which Giovanni da Verrazano (1485-1528), the Italian explorer, discovered New York Bay in 1524. Giovanni da Verrazzano was also the first explorer to name the new sites in North American after people and places in the Old World. Although born in Tuscany, Italy, he represented the country of France. His goals were to explore the coast of the "New Land" and to find a passage to the Orient. It was believed that there might be a passage between North and South America, and so he was chosen by King Francis I to sail to this area and discover a new and quicker route to the Orient. He returned to France after several voyages with a claim of the New World for France on July 8, 1524. His main route was across the Atlantic to mainly Central and North America. He made contact with the natives on most voyages, trading with them and learning about the land. In 1528, while exploring Florida, the Bahamas and the Lesser Antilles, Giovanni anchored his ship away from shore and rowed ashore in a little boat to greet the natives. He soon discovered they were not pleasant natives who wished to trade, but cannibals. He was killed and eaten immediately while his brother watched helplessly from the ship. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canadian 14c Northern Light stamp issued November 15, 1978. Because Prince Edward Island is sheltered from the Atlantic by Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, it is free of fog and its waters are much warmer in summer than those of its neighboring provinces. But, in winter, the narrow Northumberland Strait, surrounding the island on three sides and never more than twenty-five miles wide, is frozen over preventing ready access to the mainland. This frozen strait and the vessels that first worked it have altered the history of this tiny province. One such ship that braved the ice-clogged strait was the Northern Light. Built in Quebec in 1876, she was 144 feet long and weighed nearly four hundred tons. lcebreaking technology was then embryonic, and the Northern Light was thought by many to be a feeble instrument with which to tackle the fierce grip of the strait. Still, for fourteen years she provided mail and passenger service between the mainland and Prince Edward Island. But transportation costs for the Northern Light were too high, and this remarkable ice vessel, one of the very first wooden ships to challenge the frozen north, was scrapped in 1890 after becoming a point of political contention between the Canadian government and the people of Prince Edward Island. Despite the difficulties of geography and transportation, the people of Prince Edward Island have long lived a life of rugged independence on the Northumberland Strait, where the regular run of the Northern Light was once a welcome beacon in the dead of winter.
