After studying in Cincinnati and Philadelphia, Fernand Lungren moved to New York City in 1877. There he became quickly established as a leading commercial illustrator and participant in the day's dynamic art scene, which was dominated by a young generation of American painters who were exploring a variety of new European-influenced styles. Lungren was one of the first to "depict the life of New York streets under their new lights dimmed by rain," and his role in the avant-garde was confirmed when he became a founding member of The Tile Club, an organization of young artists who gathered to create decorative tiles, while enjoying lively social occasions. When a group of Tile Club members planned to take a trip to Paris, Lungren quickly decided to join them, departing in June, 1882 with J. Carroll Beckwith, William Merritt Chase, Frederic P. Vinton, Arthur Quartley, and Robert Blum. In the fall of 1882, Lungren enrolled at the Académie Julian, however finding "no profit in the dull routine of copying the figure" [John A. Berger, Fernand Lungren: A Biography (Santa Barbara, CA: Schauer Press, 1936), p. 46], he left the school a few months later but remained in Paris. Lungren's delight in observing modern Paris is fully evident in The Gardens of Luxembourg, a large canvas depicting the famed Luxembourg Gardens on a warm spring day. Frequented by stylish women, well-dressed children as well as by students, intellectuals, and artists, the famous park was a place to enjoy both Parisian society as well as respite from the city's hustle and bustle. Lungren captured this experience of the park, focusing on an open courtyard in its eastern side that was surrounded beyond its stone guardrail by a thick bower of trees. The panoramic viewpoint Lundgren employed allowed him to include a number of figural groupings lounging on chairs or strolling in small groups. Wearing fashionable gowns, hats embellished with flowers, and holding parasols, the figures enjoy leisurely conversation and the benefits of fresh air. As in the scenes of the American desert that would later bring him fame, in The Gardens of Luxembourg, Lungren painted with crispness and clarity, noting the details of his subjects' attire in meticulous detail. Indeed, expressing the way that the pleasures of the sitting room had been moved outdoors in Paris during the prosperous early 1880s, The Gardens of Luxembourg is a testament to Lungren's ability to encapsulate the exuberant spirit of public life that he experienced during his stay in the French capital.
