      Agnes Cathinka Wilhelmine Lunn (Danish, 1850-1941). "Five Chesnuts" oil on canvas, 1885. Signed and dated at lower left. A striking painting by notable Danish artist Agnes Lunn who studied under Jean Leon Gerome and Leon Bonnat, and specialized in equestrian art as she was fascinated by the anatomy and movements of horses. The composition features five chesnut brown horses relaxing in an open field. While the horses are rendered in a realistic manner, by contrast, the landscape is rendered in an Impressionist style. Mounted in an attractive custom frame and perfect for any collector of Danish or equestrian art. Size (painting): 18.25" L x 28.25" W (46.4 cm x 71.8 cm) Size (frame): 23.375" L x 33.625" W (59.4 cm x 85.4 cm) About the artist: Agnes Lunn was a Danish painter as well as sculptor. She studied with F.C. Lund and Otto Bache in Denmark. In addition, Lunn studied under Jean Leon Gerome, Leon Bonnat, and J. Bastien-Lepage in Paris. She also attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts' school for women. Lunn traveled to Italy, Greece, France, the Netherlands, Iceland, and Belgium. Her work was exhibited at the spring exhibition in Charlottenborg, the National Exhibition of 1909 in Aarhus, the Women's Exhibition in Copenhagen, and the David Collection in Copenhagen in 2016. Louvre' (lower left), inscribed 'Copie After P Potter Brudstykke / Louvre / af / Agnes / Lunn' to the upper stretcher bar, 25.3 x 32.5 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Lunn was a painter and sculptor who was a pupil of Otto Bache (1839-1927) and Frederik Christian Lund (1826-1901) in Copenhagen, before going on to study under Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848-1884), Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904), and Léon Bonnat (1833-1922) in Paris.  The present work is a copy of a detail from Paulus Potter's (1625-1654) painting 'La Prairie', or 'Three Oxen in a Vast Prairie', produced in 1652 and held in the collection of the Louvre [INV 1732]. This choice of subject-matter is typical of Lunn, who was fascinated by the depiction of animals, especially horses and cattle.

Tall trees under a blue and white cloud sky. Signed bottom right "AG Lunn 1904" also signed and dated on stretcher and titled and signed on label. Housed in an ebonized molded wood frame with gold liner. SIZE: 27" x 19-1/4". CONDITION: Minor inpainting very good. 9-73027
