        NAN LURIE (1910-1985) Barred.

        Est: $800 - $1,200

NAN LURIE (1910-1985) Barred . Lithograph. 435x334 mm; 17 1/8x13 1/8 inches, full margins. Edition of approximately 25. Signed, titled and dedicated in pencil, lower margin. Published by the New York City WPA. A very good impression. Lurie's work during the 1930s focused on the daily lives of African Americans as they faced racial and financial hardships. Before becoming employed by the Federal Art Project in the graphics division in 1935 in New York, she attended the Art Students League. Lurie's first solo exhibition was held in 1947 at Feigl Gallery, New York, where she showed her increasingly abstract paintings, a departure from her earlier representative works with political overtones.

NAN LURIE, Baseball Painting, Dodgers & Yankees

        Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Original oil on canvas painting by Nan Lurie (American, 1910-1985). Image is a stylized representation of a baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and another New York team, circa 1950s. Signed at lower right. Canvas measures 21" x 27", framed to 26" x 32". Good visual condition with repairs. Two patches visible verso. Clearly visible on the uniforms are the words "Dodgers" and "New York" which was worn by both the Giants and the Yankees at the time. The painting also shows a black player in the New York uniform. The Giants integrated African American players in the late 1940s and played the Dodgers many times in that era. However, it could also be a depiction of the 1955 World Series in which the Dodgers played the New York Yankees, the same season that the Yankees added Elston Howard to their roster. Either way it is a rare modern art depiction of Major League Baseball at a pivotal time.
