Note: Manette (Madeleine) de Lyee de Belleau was a part of the French symbolist movement. Her decadent works of art include bronze vampires, Russian dancers, and erotic ceramics.

          White shard, polychrome glaze, with gold France, c. 1930 Design: Madeleine de Lyée de Belleau called Manette (1873-1957) - French sculptor and ceramics artist Presumably executed by Atelier de céramique d'art de Boulogne d'André Fau et Marcel Guillard Underneath signed 'LYÉE scp', inscribed 'marcel guitard' and 'Collection de la Marquise de Sevigné' Gold-ground with craquelure Height: 15 cm, diameter: 27 cm, width: 16 cm Very good condition Rare lidded box in unique design with cabbage knob and carrot decor as well as handles in form of a ram Only very few works by the French sculptor and ceramics artist Manette de Lyée de Belleau are known. This unusual lidded box is difficult to ascribe to any sort of style. The knob in form of a cabbage, the carrot decor in relief on the lid, the splendidly gilt surface with the unusual craquelure and the handles in form of a ram make it a unique piece of ceramics art. The box is signed 'LYÉE scp' underneath and is inscribed with the maker's mark 'marcel guitard' and 'Collection de la Marquise de Sevigné'. It is 15 cm high and has a diameter of 16 cm. With the handles it is 27 cm wide and in very good condition with small isolated scuff marks. With a chipped spot in lower edge of lid that is not visible when the box is closed. Manette (1873-1957) The self-taught artist Madeleine de Lyée de Belleau called Manette was mainly active as a sculptor, ceramicist and photographer and undertook research trips to Africa and the Orient. She published her travel experiences in the 1930s on the radio and in newspaper articles. In addition to her sculptures, ceramics and photographs, Manette created gouaches, lithographs and etchings.
