JOHN GOODWIN LYMANLA SOUFRIÉRE, SAINTE LUCIEoil on canvassigned; also signed and titled on the reverse 28 ins x 20 ins; 71.1 cms x 50.8 cms Provenance:Private Collection, TorontoJohn Lyman (1886-1967) leads the long list of anglophone Quebeckers who championed the attributes of the School of Paris and French subjective colour. He studied in Paris in 1907 at the Académie Julian, befriended J. W. Morrice and enrolled in 1909 at the Académie Matisse. Fauvism and Matisse, with whom he maintained a correspondence, were Lyman’s touchstones. He returned to Montreal in an attempt to introduce modernism to Quebec, however, Lyman’s art was ridiculed by the media and he departed for a 28 year residence and sojourn through France, Spain, and North Africa. The depression brought him back to Quebec where in 1939 Lyman formed the Contemporary Art Society (CAS) to exhibit and promote modern art. By 1948 there was serious dissension within its ranks. Borduas and the Automatistes split off to pen the Refus Global and Alfred Pellan issued his manifesto: Prisme d'Yeux. Lyman’s commitment to modernist figuration was out of step with the prevailing spirit of abstraction; the CAS disbanded that year. Nevertheless, Lyman’s subjective colour left an indelible impression upon the art of Quebec. Throughout his long, productive career, Lyman sought exotic lands which allowed him full reign to employ extravagant Fauvist colour combinations. La Soufriére, Sainte Lucie is a fine example of Lyman’s major aesthetic interests.Estimate: $8,000–10,000

The concept of spending summer holidays at the seaside is quite a modern one, and John Lyman embraced this subject, painting beach scenes in locations ranging from France to North America. An inheritance gave Lyman financial freedom, and he was a very cosmopolitan man, taking many sojourns abroad. As Louise Dompierre writes, "the leisurely contemplation of human nature and of nature generally" reflected the predilections of his lifestyle. Lyman was a modernist and a founder of Montreal's Contemporary Arts Society. Although he chose not to venture into abstraction, he was keenly aware of the relationships created by line and colour. He stated that he needed to reflect his interior life through the images of exterior life. Group on Provincetown Beach, infused with a mood of sweet reverie and the pleasure of a day at the beach, is a fine example of his beach scenes.

It was after seeing a work by James Wilson Morrice in Paris that he turned his interest to art. He found himself extremely drawn to the work of the revolutionary Fauvist French painter Henri Matisse. He sought him out and enrolled at the Académie Matisse where, though the students were taught by others, Matisse gave them a formal weekly critique, and would occasionally invite them to his home. Lyman saw several of Matisse's masterpieces at his Issy-les-Moulineaux studio. Lyman lived most of his early life in Europe and abroad, returning to Montreal in 1931 to teach and paint. His work is characterized by its strong mood and depth of feeling - he often placed the main emphasis on colour, as with this lovely portrait of a girl resting on a bench. He worked tirelessly to foster appreciation for modern art in Canada and established The Lyman Summer Art Class in Quebec in the 1930s, and the Contemporary Arts Society in 1939.

Lyman spent time in Paris - meeting Henri Matisse through his studies at the Académie Matisse - and traveled throughout Europe and North Africa. He also visited Bermuda and Los Angeles. Upon his return to Montreal in 1931, he established The Atelier in cooperation with Hazen Sise, George Holt and André Bieler, which held art classes, lectures and exhibitions. In 1936 he began writing art reviews for The Montrealer newspaper and in 1939 formed the Contemporary Arts Society to bring together English and French speaking artists in Montreal. Lyman was completely bilingual and this group brought together such disparate artists as Goodridge Roberts and Paul-Émile Borduas, with a common interest in surmounting differences and fostering a free evolution in painting. Low Tide is characterized by a bold simplicity of form and a sensual atmosphere that captures the bathers' enjoyment of this sun-drenched day at the beach. It is a charming work that showcases Lyman's confident use of heightened colour such as in the pink sand, plum coloured wet sand and bright green moss-covered rocks.
