Albert Lynch (American/Peruvian, 1851-1912) Oil painting on canvas, Belle Epoche Woman in red dress, signed center right. In gilt gesso carved frame. 6.5lb Albert Lynch was born in Trujillo, Peru to Irish parents. When he was twenty-one he went to Paris to study and live and studied at l'Ãcole des Beaux-Arts with the painters Jules Achille NoÃ«l, Gabriel Ferrier and Henri Lehmann. His first exhibition was at the Paris Salon of 1880, in the 1890 Salon he received a bronze medal, a first-class medal in 1892, and a gold medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle. He was made Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur in 1901. His favorite subject to paint were portraits of beautiful young women composed with exquisite sensitivity and romance and he preferred pastel, gouache, and watercolor although he sometimes painted in oils. His work maintained the spirit of the Belle Ãpoque. Measurements: Approx. 12.25 x 16.25 inches; framed 19 x 24.5 inches Condition: Very good condition, some overall crazing. Painting has been revarnished. The side of the race near the edge of jaw with an area of restoration. The right side of the woman's arm may have restoration as well. Domestic Shipping: $75

The Parisian painter Albert Lynch, who was of German-Peruvian ancestry, specialized in painting female subjects to which he brought a charming elegance and sophistication characteristic of belle époque paintings. The present work is a striking example of his ability to create an image that seems to blend portraiture with a more universal conception of ideal beauty. Alberto Fernando Lynch was born in Gleisweiler, a small town in Germany's Rhineland, to a Peruvian father and German mother. His father's merchant family had moved from Peru to Paris in the late 1840s. His mother came from an artistic family: she was the daughter of Thomas Koeffler, a German landscape painter who was working in Paris in the 1850s. The couple settled in Paris where their son Albert studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, and in the studios of the figure painters Gabriel Ferrier and Henri Lehmann, and the landscape painter Jules Noël. He exhibited regularly at the Salon between 1879 and 1934. At the Salon of 1890 and was awarded a 3rd class medal, a 1st class medal in 1892 and a gold medal in 1900 at the Exposition Universelle. He also worked as an illustrator, and produced drawings for Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas, fils, Le Père Goriot by Honoré de Balzac and La Parisienne by Henry Becque. Given the strong anti-German feeling in Paris after the Franco-Prussian war of 1870–1871, Lynch seems to have been happy to play up the Peruvian side of his background, and it seems to have become generally circulated that he had been born in Peru. This accounts for his birthplace having appeared in print sometimes as Lima. HID01801242017

(Gleisweiler 1860 – 1950 Monaco) On the Deck of the Aranella, signed Albert Lynch, oil on canvas, 64.5 x 46.5 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection Germany. The works of Albert Lynch are imbued with the spirit and elegance of the Belle Époque. His oeuvre consists mainly of charming portraits of ladies, which he primarily created using pastels. He worked with oils less frequently, albeit with no less skill, as this lot proves. His fashionably elegant approach made him a greatly sought-after social painter. Indeed, the painting ‘On the Deck of the Aranella’ seems to have been commissioned by Grand Duke Frederick-Francis II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Lynch had painted the Grand Duke’s yacht for him as far back as 1891 but the lot shown here, however, goes much further in its depiction: it leads us to the deck of the yacht, where a young, self-confident lady is approaching the viewer. The name of the yacht, ‘Aranella’, is written in red on her simple black dress, with the lady almost seeming to embody the spirit of sport and the sailboat itself.

LYNCH, Albert, (Peruvian, 1851-1912): Young Gypsy Girl, Oil on Canvas, 16.125" x 12.25", signed upper left, original carved and gilded gesso frame, 21.75" x 17.75", A.A. Munsons framing label affixed verso. Lynch was born in Peru but studied in Paris at L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts. "The women of his time were his favorite subject to paint and he preferred pastel, gouache and watercolor although he occasionally worked in the oil technique. His work maintained the spirit of the Belle Époque. He illustrated such books as Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas, fils, Le Pere Goriot by Honore de Balzac and La Parisienne by Henry Becque." - Wikipedia.
