    • Micheál Mac Liammóir,  Seated figure
      Nov. 27, 2024

      Micheál Mac Liammóir,  Seated figure

      Est: £800 - £1,200

Micheál Mac Liammóir,  Irish 1899-1978 -  Seated figure;  watercolour, ink and pencil on paper, signed centre right edge 'Miceál Mac Liammóir', 17.3 x 25 cm (ARR)  Note:  Although Micheál Mac Liammóir is best known for his illustrious theatrical career, this work demonstrates his rich creativity and talent in various artistic mediums. The seated figure, an actor wearing a bycocket and a vibrant yellow and green tunic, seems to be caught in a moment of relaxation whilst preparing for a scene.  Mac Liammóir founded the Gate Theatre in Dublin with his partner Hilton Edwards, and Daisy Bannard Cogley, and Gearóid Ó Lochlainn in 1928. Edwards has since been dubbed the founder of Irish Theatre. Mac Liammóir’s key success came from his one-man show ‘The Importance of Being Oscar’ and his role as the mocking, unseen narrator in multi-Oscar-winning film Tom Jones in 1963. Although homosexuality was never legalised in their lifetime, he and Edwards were described by Éibhear Walshe to be the only publicly acknowledged homosexual couple in Ireland and jointly created freemen of the City of Dublin in 1970.   Despite becoming one of the most recognisable figures in the arts in twentieth century Ireland, he was an english-born actor. Mac Liammóir moved to Ireland in 1917, whereby he successfully fabricated an entire identity as a native Irishman born in Cork which was unquestioned for the rest of his life.

David Clarke (1920-2005) and Micheal MacLiammoir (1899-1978) SET DESIGNS FOR "HOME FOR CHRISTMAS" or "THE GRAND TOUR" BY MICHEAL MAC LIAMMOIR Medium: gouache over pencil on Goodall's Bristol board; (6); (unframed); (3 with tracings squared up for transfer) Signature: variously inscribed and annotated with colour and set instructions Dimensions: 33 by 56cm., 13 by 22in. Provenance Exhibited: Literature: Notes: Home for Christmas or The Grand Tour was written by Mícheál Mac Líammóir and its first production was on Stephen's Day, December 1950 by Edwards-Mac Liammoir Gate Theatre Productions at The Gate, Dublin. The synopsis of the play is described as follows: Sir Roderick Killjoy has three immensely eligible young daughters, who are being pursued by three entirely unacceptable suitors, and he decides to take his daughters on a grand tour of Europe, away from such distractions. Leaving his house in the capable hands of his cousin, Prudence Pockett, he embarks pursued by the three young men, who are being assisted in the chase by the girls tutor, Mr. Wogan. The play is set in Sir Roderick's House in Mountjoy Square, Dublin in 1885 and the original cast included its producers in the lead roles of Sir Killjoy (Edwards) and Mr Wogan (Mac Líammóir) with Maureen Cusack as one of Killjoy's daughters. Mac Líammóir is credited as Designer for the original production. The provenance of these works however suggests a second hand at work in the play's artist direction. These drawings originate from the collection of David Clarke who worked for a time at The Gate under Mac Líammóir. According to Clarke's family, due to differences with Mac Líammóir Clarke was removed from his role in this play and subsequently his artistic responsibilities were never credited.A desirable and intriguing collection of Irish theatre archival material.

Micheal MacLiammoir (1899-1978) DEIRDRE AGUS LAVARCHAM, 1919 signed and dated upper right; inscribed on reverse pen and ink with watercolour 25 by 16cm., 9.75 by 6.25in. Deirdre of the Sorrows is one of the most familiar characters from the eighth and ninth century heroic cycle of Cuchulain. Before her birth it was prophesised that her great beauty would bring about the fall of the House of Usna, High Kings of Ulster. Attempting to thwart this prophesy, King Conchubar sent the child Deirdre away to a secluded location, with only a nurse and a tutor for company. She is depicted here as a young woman with her tutor, Lavarcham, shortly before eloping with her lover Naoise. Another illustration from the legend, The Lament of Deirdre for Naoise, was included in MacLíammóir's exhibition, 'Fantasies in Colour and Black and White', held in Dublin in 1925.
