Richard MacDonald (Born 1946) "Sisters" Bronze Sculpture. • Richard MacDonald "Red Dress" Bronze Sculpture
    Jul. 24, 2024

Richard MacDonald "Red Dress" Bronze Sculpture

    Est: $10,000 - $20,000

Richard MacDonald (American, b. 1946). Large bronze sculpture titled "Red Dress, Half Life," from the "Joie de Vivre" series depicting a half life-size ballerina perched delicately on the tip of her toes. A radiant smile lights up her face and she seems to spin gracefully as the fabric of her dress swishes around her. Signed and dated 2001 along the base. From an edition of 90. With a wooden plinth. Provenance: The collection of Clint & Mary Ann Jurgens, Minnesota. Walt and Vi Jurgens, Clint's parents, began supporting Sullivan Hills, a Lutheran summer camp near their farm in Gurley, Nebraska, 50 years ago. The camp generously welcomes all children of the area with financial help and love. We are directing the proceeds of this sale to the administrators of the camp, Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries. Find out more at www.nlom.org. Lot Essay: Richard MacDonald's sculptures celebrate the beauty and physicality of the human form. He was classically trained at Art Center College in Pasanda, California. Following the great sculptural masters such as Auguste Rodin and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, he adds a contemporary element to his figural creations. His ability to focus on how the body can be manipulated has led to his work with Cirque du Soleil, MGM, and the Olympic Games. His process involves making a clay "sketch" or maquette of his work. These quarter-size models are the basis for his half life to life-size works. He then utilizes the famously painstaking Lost Wax method in which his work will become first a wax model and then a bronze sculpture.

RICHARD MACDONALD "ANGELIC CRYSTAL" BRONZE SCULPTURE

    Est: -

Richard MacDonald (Born 1946) "Angelic Crystal" Bronze Sculpture. Crystal is a young ballerina who has posed for Richard many times. She has a quiet radiance, a pure and thoughtful quality that gives her grace an added dimension. She is lithe and delicate, and as Richard studied her, he was struck by an “other-worldliness’ in her demeanor and swan-like posture. The arms he had drawn back became simple flutters of drapery falling from the shoulders and blown back in ruffles that suggest an angel’s wings. Subtlety and classical restraint are the hallmarks of Richard MacDonald’s style, so the angelic reference is not exaggerated, but rather left to the viewer’s imagination. Created by artist Richard MacDonald for the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics, Flair Across America celebrates the triumph of the human spirit and the idealization of the human form. While its message is universal, Flair Across America also embodies the Olympic credo stated by the father of the modern-day Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, "The essence lies not in the victory, but in the struggle.? Epitomizing the energy that MacDonald devotes to his monuments, the artist brought together gold-medal Olympic athletes to tour with the monument, including Kurt Thomas who popularized the gymnastic movement called The Flair. RICHARD MACDONALD "STUDY FOR THE ROSE" BRONZE SCULPTURE

    Est: -

Richard MacDonald (Born 1946) "Study For The Rose, Half Life" Bronze Sculpture. This work draws on Richard MacDonald’s highly developed sensitivity for the experience of the dancer, and displays all the quiet beauty of a private moment of reflection. In half-life size the supple and delicate form of the ballerina has real substance—an almost-breathing presence that immediately draws us to wonder at the thoughts of the ballerina toying with the ribbon on her shoe. Her youth and preoccupation give a sense of life and warmth to the sculpture; the beautiful line of her arm draped over the bar is a study in the effortless grace of the well-trained dancer. Her soft cheek rests on her shoulder, and we feel the tenderness of her childish daydream—yet she holds the posture of an accomplished professional.
