  • John MacGregor (Canadian 1944 - 2020) lithograph "Portrait of John Dobbs"
    Dec. 12, 2021

John MacGregor (Canadian 1944 - 2020) lithograph "Portrait of John Dobbs"

    Est: $100 - $200

John MacGregor (Canadian 1944 - 2020) lithograph "Portrait of John Dobbs". John MacGregor's prints, paintings, and sculptures are in many public gallery collections such as the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Vancouver Art Gallery, Windsor Art Gallery, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, and the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa. In 1996, he created a sculpture for the former Rodman Hall Arts Centre, St. Catharines, Ontario. From 1968 to 1987, he was represented by the Isaacs Gallery and from 1998, by the Christopher Cutts Gallery, both in Toronto. John MacGregor was born in Dorking, England in 1944, but came to Canada as a child. By the 1960s he was a working artist in Toronto, where he was represented by the Isaacs Gallery, and was friends with fellow artists, Gordon Rayner and Graham Coughtry. Their shows featured sculptured wood fantasies including arching doors and irregular chairs. In 1993, he said about his work: “I do uncommon things with mundane objects to tantalize, amuse and finally communicate.” In 1970, MacGregor and Gordon Rayner made a film "Man at the Centre" about what it is like trying to survive as an artist. At different times, he taught at the New School of Art in Toronto; York University, Toronto; the Ontario College of Art, Toronto; and the University of Toronto. He is known for his wavy and interconnected doors, chairs and clocks. MacGregor plays with the effects of time and warps objects accordingly, in prints, paintings, sculptures and entire rooms. John MacGregor passed away in 2020.

JOHN MACGREGORGILLETTEacrylic on canvastitled on the reverse 69 ins x 47 ins; 175.3 cms x 119.4 cms Note:John MacGregor is best known for his fascination with time, and specifically how perceptions and the importance of time differ based on age, culture, and geographical location. However, time is always consistent in its ability to both guide us and imprison us at once. MacGregor sees this as making time dangerously disorienting, a concept he explores and is inspired by in his work. Gillette represents this bewilderment with the abstract concept of time. Full of lightness and darkness, the abstractions of this canvas are both enriching and disorienting. A pair of static butterflies recalls the mysterious transformations of these creatures over their life span, and their ability to perplex and fascinate. His work has been reviewed and admired by Canadian art historian Joan Murray in "Painter as Time Traveler," "Best in Contemporary Art," and "Canadian Art in the 20th Century." Additionally, he is represented in the collections of The National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Vancouver Art Gallery, The Winnipeg Art Gallery, and numerous other art institutions and corporations.
