MARIAN T. MACINTOSH Oil on Canvas, Ireland, Philadelphia Ten

    Est: $1,000 - $2,000

36.25" H x 42.25" W x 2" D in the frame; Signed on lower right hand corner; Irish American Artist born in 1869 and died in 1936. In 1919, her painting "Evening in the Harbor" was accepted by Art Institute of Chicago for its annual exhibition; this became her first official recognition as an artist. After that, her work appeared in exhibitions in New York, Cincinnati and Philadelphia. Her work was included in an exhibition of 247 paintings at the Art Club of Philadelphia which led to the birth of the Philadelphia Ten which was an evolving all women's group of painters and sculptures which was exhibited together for almost 30 years. Landscapes were the more regular exhibitions of the Philadelphia Ten as many of the artists featured in this group had been trained at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women which focused heavily on landscape work as well as still-lifes and portraits. Many of the women in the Philadelphia Ten were educated before 1910 and they represented the first generation of modern art professionals who felt compelled to choose art over a commitment to home and family. The Philadelphia Ten allowed women of the first half of the twentieth century to have a professional career and provide themselves with economic independence and professional success in a field where it was not always assured. Even throughout profound economic times of hardship such as WWI, the stock market crash of 1929 followed by the Great Depression, and WWII, the Philadelphia Ten continued to produce and sell their art adding to the collective story of each of these women. Their work was exhibited longer and more widely than any other all-women's American artist group.
