          May. 23, 2014

ULRICH MACK (* 1934) Wild horses, Kenya 1964

          Est: €5,000 - €6,000

Vintage silver print 29 x 39,5 cm (11.4 x 15.6 in) Signed, dated and extensively annotated by the photographer in pencil on the reverse, his copyright stamp on the reverse LITERATURE Ulrich Mack, Pferde, Bern 1966. 21-22; Hans-Michael Koetzle (ed.), twen. Revision einer Legende, Munich 1995, p. 98-99. Ulrich Mack's photo essay about wild horses in Kenya brought him international recognition. At the time, Mack was accompanying a team of filmmakers surrounding director Gualtiero Jacopetti (Africa Addio) to the African steppe as a photo reporter. Equipped with a Leica M2, he had been awaiting the herd when the animals, herded together by Kenyans, suddenly galloped towards him. Instead of running away, the photographer took exactly 35 pictures, as if in a trance - from the midst of the herd, which surrounded him without trampling him. The photographs were published under the title Mondo Cavallo by the youth magazine twen (No. 4/1964) edited by Willy Fleckhaus - the best-designed magazine in Germany at the time. The visual power of the present image was heightened further by its generous placement across a double page. Only the caption, inserted in the upper left corner, marred the evocative visual experience. For this feature, Mack received the renowned World Press Photo Award in no less than four separate categories.

ULRICH MACK (* 1934) 'Ein Rat für den amerikanischen Präsidenten' (A piece of advice for the American president), Cologne June 1963

          Est: €3,000 - €3,500

Gelatin silver print, printed later 20,2 x 29,8 cm (8 x 11.7 in) Signed, titled and dated by the photographer in pencil on the reverse, his copyright and reproduction stamp on the reverse LITERATURE Hans Michael Koetzle/Ulrich Mack (eds.), Kennedy in Berlin, Munich 2013, p. 12-13. Ulrich Mack was one of the few privileged media representatives officially permitted to cover the entire trip of the most powerful man in the world to Germany, from June 23 to 26, 1963. Working for the magazine Quick, the German magazine with the highest printrun apart from Stern, Mack was never far from the action. The photographer, 28 years old at the time, was equipped with six Leicas - an impressive number. He had outfitted his M2 and M3 cameras with fixed focal distances of 28, 35, 50 and 90 mm, so as never to miss a motif. "After all, I had to be better than the others," Ulrich Mack recalls. On Sunday morning, Kennedy and his entourage had landed at the Cologne/Bonn Airport. In Cologne, Mack took the present photograph, resoundingly entitled A Piece of Advice for the American President. Mack numbers it among his personal favourites, recounting in an interview (on ntv.de): "He was diving into the crowd, an unknown phenomenon in Germany until then. There is a picture of a woman almost sticking her finger into his nose outside the Cologne Cathedral. She wanted to tell him what the American President should think. That's very German. She was a teacher, I think." Only a modest series of six photographs appeared in the Quick edition of July 7, 1963, entitled Kennedy and the Berliners - "Nothing in the World Can Separate Them Now." In November of the same year, John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas.
