Pieter van Maes (active Rotterdam? c.1675)

    Est: $10,000 - $15,000

A ray, plaice, skate, herring and other fish on the floor signed 'PV.MAES.f.' ('PV' linked, lower left) oil on panel 281/4 x 39 1/8 in. (71.7 x 99.3 cm.) PROVENANCE Maria F. K. Fliermans, by whom given to the Museum in 1949. NOTES The present painting is one of a few compositions known by the artist. A smaller still life of the same subject (private collection, Li‚ge) is similarily signed and one can be certain they are by the same hand. Little is known about the artist, but what is known is that he was an active art dealer and records show him listed as Pieter van Maes, Mase or Massius. We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague, for his assistance in providing information on the artist.
