        Est: £800 - £1,200

Follower of William Marlow, British 1740-1813- The London riverfront with the Adelphi and Waterloo Bridge; and A View of Blackfriars Bridge and St Paul's Cathedral, London; oils on canvas, the first 29 x 51.5 cm., the second 29 x 54.8 cm., two (2). Note: William Marlow painted these same views on a number occasions. The view of the London riverfront with the Adelphi and Waterloo Bridge was a subject he turned to at least five times: two versions were in the Westminster (later National Westminster, now National Provincial) Bank collection, a third is in a private collection, a fourth is in the London Museum [A25874], and a fifth appeared at Christie's, London, 29 October 2015, lot 163. The present work must date to after 1817 when the old Waterloo Bridge opened. The second subject was similarly treated by Marlow several times: see, for example, versions in the Guildhall Art Gallery [2185], at Yale [B1976.7.54], and one which came up at Sotheby’s, London, 6 June 2007, lot 73. Oval variations are with the Corporation of London and at Castle Howard, and a watercolour and preliminary sketch for the scene are in an album of London drawings by the artist in the British Museum. Blackfriars Bridge was designed by Robert Mylne and was opened on 19th November 1769, though was later replaced between 1864-9 by another bridge of the same name. It owes its name to an old monastery situated on the north bank of the river which dated from the end of the twelfth century. The original bridge, shown here, consisted of nine arches, was 995 feet in length from wharf to wharf, and was built at a cost of £152,840, 3 shillings and 10 pence. Marlow exhibited views of the Bridge at the Society of Artists in 1772 and 1774, on both occasions with a companion picture of Westminster Bridge. Please refer to department for condition report

William Marlow (British, 1740-1813) - View in London of Henry VII's Chapel at the East End of Westminster Abbey - oil on canvas

        Est: £3,000 - £5,000

William Marlow (British, 1740-1813) London, the East End of Westminster Abbey with Henry VII's Chapel seen from Old Palace Yard signed with initials lower right "WM" oil on canvas, in an 18th century frame h:47 w:68 cm Provenance: As lot 393 Other Notes: This previously unrecorded painting shows the east end of Westminster Abbey as it appeared in the eighteenth century from Old Palace Yard, with the steeply pitched roof of the nave and the pinnacles of the north transept visible beyond the Tudor Perpendicular architecture of Henry VII's Chapel. The Georgian houses to the left conceal the Chapter House which can now be seen from the where this view is painted. These houses, along with the buildings beyond the Chapel, were demolished when the site was remodelled by a scheme to clear away the buildings encroaching on the Abbey which was initiated in the 1790s. An old label on the back of the cross-member of the stretcher describes the composition as "Westminster Abbey before the restoration": it must have been added in the nineteenth century after the architectural changes to the area were carried out in the 1800s, or it may refer to the restoration which was carried out to the decaying stonework of Henry VII's Chapel between 1809 and 1822. At the right of the view, beyond the trees and the figure carrying panniers, it is just possible to make out the buildings in the north-east corner of Old Palace Yard which housed some of the offices for the old House of Commons: these seem to be the architecturally undistinguished buildings that were replaced by a taller, classically articulated design by John Vardy known as the 'Stone Building' (because it was faced in Portland stone with Palladian features) which was completed between 1768 and 1770 (Howard Colvin ed., History of The King's Works 1660-1782, vol 5, 1976, pp 429-430; the John Vardy building is shown clearly in a watercolour by Thomas Malton Junior dating from around 1790 in the Parliamentary Art Collection, WOA 6927: www.parliament.uk/worksofart/artwork/thomas-malton-jnr/old-palace-yard-westminster/6927 ). As it appears here, therefore, the topography of Old Palace Yard shows it as it was in the mid-eighteenth century, before the new Stone Building was finished in 1770. William Marlow served his apprenticeship with the London view-painter Samuel Scott from 1756 to 1763, and worked as an assistant in his studio before setting up independently from 1764. He exhibited with the Society of Artists in 1764 and 1765, and then travelled through France to Italy in 1765 with support from the Duchess of Northumberland, returning to England in 1766. Thereafter he regularly exhibited French and Italian landscapes and view-paintings at the Society of Artists, and later at the Royal Academy, as well as some English subjects and views of London and Twickenham. He frequently painted the London Thames, especially river scenes including Westminster Abbey and St Paul's Cathedral. This painting is, however, the only one by him at present known which shows part of Westminster Abbey seen from a street viewpoint. Topographical evidence, however, is not always accurate, and artists who painted London views sometimes relied on drawings or studies they had made earlier than a finished picture. In this case a date in the 1770s might be suggested by the distinctive form of the fashionable phaeton at the left, which appears to be an example of the early type known as a crane-neck phaeton on account of its high seat, small wheels at the front and distinctive suspension, a design which was notably fast but was also prone to tipping over at speed. While the architectural detail implies a date before 1768-70, the painting itself may have been done a little later, or the phaeton added subsequently to a picture. In its general tonality, palette and in the quality of its handling, the painting is comparable to other relatively early views by William Marlow. We are grateful to Professor Michael Liversidge FSA, University of Bristol, School of Arts/History of Art Department for his assistance with the catalogue entry.
