EDITEUR » Ht : 46 cm. Long : 42 cm. B.E. Milieu du XIXe siècle. Cette œuvre de Carlo MAROCHETTI est un rare témoignage de l’une des deux versions du projet de statue commémorative présentées par Carlo Marochetti pour le tombeau de Napoléon sur l’esplanade des Invalides. Historique de l’œuvre: Dès l’annonce du retour des cendres de l’Empereur, vers 1840, le gouvernement Thiers suivant les instructions du Roi songe à ériger un tombeau pour Napoléon sous le dôme des Invalides. Après un concours, le projet du tombeau fut confié à l’architecte Louis Tullius Visconti (1791-1853), et la statue équestre à Carlo Marochetti , le tout en respectant l’architecture de Mansart : ‘Le fac-similé du présent projet (la statue équestre au sommet, le cadavre de l’Empereur tout en bas et les quatre cariatides) sera élevé au beau milieu de l’hôtel des Invalides à la place même indiquée par la loi…, et nous imaginons cette statue, offerte en souscription par Auguste Asse, surmontant un mausolée…’. Deux aquarelles de la fondation Dosne Thiers présentent un schéma d’ensemble prévu par Visconti et Marochetti : sur le rond-point situé en avant des fossés des Invalides devait être érigée une statue équestre de l’Empereur placée sur un piédestal avec des colonnes engagées et ses médaillons, le socle dans le style de la Renaissance italienne. La représentation de l’Empereur lui-même fut l’objet de nombreuses discussions entre la commission parlementaire en charge du projet et l’artiste, principalement au sujet du costume que devait revêtir le souverain. Le costume de sacre fut adopté au détriment d’un uniforme plus réaliste et le choix de l’emplacement du monument à ériger se fixa sur l’esplanade des Invalides. Faute de moyens financiers, le monument n’eut jamais l’occasion d’aboutir et sa réalisation fut abandonnée en 1849. L’assemblée avait supprimé la statue équestre comprise dans le programme du tombeau, et Marochetti ne fut pas chargé d’exécuter le projet. Le bronze monumental érigé dans l’atelier de l’artiste aux Vaux-de-Seine (qui selon les instructions de la commission devait mesurer cinq mètres au garrot du cheval), fondu par Louis-Auguste Asse fut démonté et déménagé à plusieurs reprises. Mis en vente en 1852, on n’en retrouve aujourd’hui aucune trace. Il ne resterait que deux esquisses en cire de l’œuvre de Marochetti représentant Napoléon en empereur romain l’une conservée dans la collection du comte Charles-André Colonna Walewski et l’autre à la Walters Art Gallery de Baltimore. Cette dernière provenait de l’ancienne collection d’Antoine-Louis Barye et figura à la vente après décès du sculpteur en 1876. Il reste également des documents d’archives, ainsi que quelques exemplaires en bronze de l’édition d’Auguste Asse en 1839-40, et la mention dans son livre d’édition ‘la statue équestre de Napoléon par Marochetti.
