Set of 101 engravings from the series, mostly ±12x20 cm., mostly signed "Je[an] Marot fecit" in the plate, (Paris), ±1670, bound in contemp. gilt calf, obl. 4to. - Lacks the title and several prints; sl. foxed and fingersoiled; final print creased and doubled; one large (water)stain affecting 4 prints. Spine-ends sl. dam.; corners bumped. = Fowler/ Baer 193; Millard 118; Kat. Orn. Berlin 2466. The so called Petit Marot, "(...) the earliest of the great series of volumes illustrating French architecture which appeared in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries" (Millard), found with a varying number of engravings (up to 122). Jean Marot was a practicing architect with the title of Architect des bâtiments du roi. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXXXIV.

[ca 1660]. Oblong 2o (238 x 337 mm). Double-page printed title, dedication and preface, 20 engraved illustrations on 19 double-page plates (some light mostly marginal staining, 3 plates trimmed). Contemporary vellum gilt, flat spine in six compartments (lacks ties, some staining to sides). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. "The chateau was begun by the Duc de Richelieu under the direction of the architect Jacques Le Mercier in 1631 ... Richelieu extended his plans to include a church and a village ... Today the chateau is gone, but the village remains as one of the most consistent examples of town planning on a small scale" (Millard).
