William Marple was an esteemed and successful landscape artist during his lifetime and traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe, learning from the masters and honing his craft. From 1879-1880, at the time this was painted, Marple served as the founder and director of the Saint Louis Artists Association. It's likely this painting has been in St. Louis ever since.
