Jacob Marrel: Magnificent Floral Still Life with Imperial Crown, Tulips, Daffodils and Other Flowers

          Est: €25,000 - €45,000

MARREL, JACOB 1614 Frankenthal - 1681 Frankfurt Title: Magnificent Floral Still Life with Imperial Crown, Tulips, Daffodils and Other Flowers in a Vase. Date: 1668. Technique: Oil on canvas. Mounting: Relined. Measurement: 73 x 58cm. Notation: Signed and dated left side of the stone slab: "J. Marrel fecit. 1.6.6 8". Frame: Framed. Provenance: Private Collection France before 1999; Gallery Sanct Lucas, Vienna; Gallery Lahcen & Rabe, Saarbruecken; Neuse Gallery, Bremen; Röchling Collection, Baden-Baden. A magnificent bouquet of flowers stands in a transparent glass vase in a closed, semi-circular niche with a protruding stone slab. Against the dark background, the colours of the flowers shine like orange, red and white fireworks with a few contrasts of blue, brown and green. The bouquet is loosely arranged, with short-stemmed and very long-stemmed specimens arranged together to create the dynamic splendour of the flowers. One of the elegant, mottled tulips has been ruined by its long, thin stem: it is broken, but there is still a minimal connection at the break. However, the flower head, which lies exactly on the edge of the stone balustrade, is in danger of falling down soon. Perhaps the stem is not broken because of the weight of the flower but is the victim of one of the many insects that can only be discovered at a second glance in the splendour of the blossom. Various beetles, ants, spiders and caterpillars enliven the 'nature morte', and on the far left, at the edge of the niche, a snail crawls. For all their beauty and artful arrangement, picked flowers always symbolise transience, as emphasised by the first fallen rose petals and the broken stem of the tulip. Jacob Marrel, who painted this magnificent still life dated 1669, is the only known pupil of Georg Flegel (catalogue 1205). After his father's death, the 13-year-old boy was apprenticed to the pioneer of still life painting in Germany in Frankfurt in 1627. In 1634, Jacob Marrel can be traced to Utrecht, where he worked - presumably as a journeyman - in the workshop of Jan Davidsz. De Heems was the leading painter of floral still life in the Netherlands. Ambrosius Bosschaert the Younger, who lived in Utrecht and specialised in flower paintings, influenced Marrel's work. After the death of his first wife, Jacob Marrel returned to Frankfurt, where he was granted citizenship in 1651 and married the widow of Matthäus Merian the Elder. Their daughter, born in 1647, was educated by her stepfather, the future naturalist and artist Maria Sibylla Merian. In 1664, Jacob Marrel moved back to Utrecht for an extended period and, in addition to his stepdaughter, also took his pupil, the young Frankfurt artist Abraham Mignon, with him, whom he in turn placed as a journeyman with his old master Jan Davidsz. De Heem mediates. Jacob Marrel returned to Frankfurt am Main for good in 1679, where he died in 1681. It is known that the painter Jacob Marrel was also active as an art dealer in Frankfurt and Utrecht and he also traded in flower bulbs. His paintings are characterised by an almost scientific observation and precise depiction of flora and fauna. The present work is evidence of this from his second phase of life, now as a master in Utrecht. Estimated shipping costs for this lot: Arrangement after the auction. (Frankenthal 1613/14–1681 Frankfurt am Main) Grapes on a tazza with a pomegranate and other fruit on and by a silver dish, signed and dated lower right: Jacob Marrel/ fecit 167..., oil on canvas, 48 x 36.5 cm, framed Provenance: sale, Sotheby’s, London, 22 April 2009, lot 25; where acquired by the present owner The present sumptuous still life is an outstanding example of the oeuvre of the German still life painter Jacob Marrel. From the lustrous skins of the grapes to the glistening flesh of the pomegranates offset by the luxurious metallic sheen of the silver tazza and salver on which all the fruit is piled, Marrel’s mastery different textures is readily apparent. Adding to the rich array is the green velvet drape upon the table, complimenting the verdant leaves hanging from the stems of the cherries and gooseberries on the left of the composition. The succulent promise of a sliced open peach in the centre contrasts, however, with the scuttling ugly form of the earwig beneath, and the nibbled edges of the leaves above, along with the spider descending from the tazza. At the top of the picture, the sense of insects ready to gnaw away at this image of beauty, is further suggested by a hovering bumblebee. The sense of imminent decay – of a sobering note to the air of indulgence in earthly pleasures, may derive from Jacob Marrel’s background as the son of Protestant refugees, a trait he shared with another Utrecht still-life painter, Roelandt Savery (1578–1639) to whose works those of Marrel are deeply indebted. Born in Frankenthal, a town in the Rhineland with a strong artistic community made up of immigrants from the Low Countries, Marrel trained in Frankfurt with Georg Flegel (1566–1638) before moving to Utrecht where he fell under the spell of the jewel-like paintings of Savery and was enraptured by the Antwerp Baroque brilliance of Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606–1684). The present painting, whose red/green palette is redolent of that of de Heem’s pupil Abraham Mignon (1640–1679), is typical of Marrel’s refined output in the latter stages of his career.

Altrest.; 46,5 cm x 58 cm. Rahmen. Oil on canvas, relined. According to Fred G. Meijer, former senior curator at the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Docmentatie (RKD) in The Hague, this painting can be recognized as one of the last works by Jacob Marrel (after circa 1675).

A.R. Literatur: Vgl. MARREL, JACOB (Frankenthal 1614 - 1681 Frankfurt am Main) Still life of flowers in a vase set on a stone plinth with a lizard and grasshopper. Oil on panel. 79 x 60 cm. Provenance: European private collection. The painting is registered at the RKD, The Hague, as by the hand of Jacob Marrel.

But from the mid-century onwards, he also painted compositions with fruit that fascinate through their richness and great sense for details. The present still life is a typical example of the late artistic period, when Marrel fell back on a rather stiff execution. Watercolour, cut-out and laid/pasted on paper 26 x 15.5cm (10 1/4 x 6 1/8in.) Provenance: Sale, Sotheby's, London, 2001, ex-Lot 185 The influence of Jacob Marrel (1613/14-1681) can be seen in the present work. Marrel created at least six tulip books. Executed while he worked in Utrecht during the late 1630s and early 1640s, his tulip books coincide with the period when the Dutch developed a passion for the tulip. Known as Tulipomania, such examples as this especially in its variegated or multistriped form, resulted in wild speculation, ending in 1637 with the crash of the bulb commodity market. Considered Holland's national flower, the tulip actually was imported in the 1580s from Turkey, where it had been cultivated by the Ottomans from the beginning of the sixteenth century onward.

Jacob Marrel, Natura morta con fiori in vaso. 1655

          Est: €25,000 - €50,000

II, p. 301, nn. 466 e 483; inoltre A.M. XIX-XX). cm 90x81.

MARREL, JACOB (Frankenthal 1614 - 1681 Frankfurt am Main) Blumenstrauss in einer Glasvase auf einer Steinplinthe mit kleiner Schnecke. Öl auf Leinwand. Unten rechts monogrammiert: J M. 58,5 x 42,5 cm. Provenienz: - Privatsammlung G. Eristoff, Paris, um 1972. - Kunsthandel David M. Koetser, Zürich. - Kunsthandel Kurt J. Müllenmeister, Solingen. - Galerie Waterman, Amsterdam. - Privatsammlung, Deutschland. - Kunsthandel Peter de Boer, Amsterdam. - Privatsammlung, Grossbritannien. Oil on canvas, unlined Germany, 17th century Jacob Marrel (1614-1681) - German still life painter The attribution has been confirmed by Dr. Fred G. Meijer, curator at the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague (private correspondence) Dimensions: 47 x 58 cm Provenance: Private collection, Germany Delicate and often small sized still lifes by Jacob Marrel are very sought after collectable items; his magnificent still life composition fetch up over €350,000 on the international art market This decorative and delicately executed still life is a typical work of the German painter Jacob Marrell who was a well-known still life painter of the 17th century. Marrel is probably best known for his paintings of sumptuous vases of flowers, set on a ledge or in a niche; but from mid-century onwards, he also painted a small number of modestly-sized fruit pieces. Jacob Marrel was a painter, draughtsman and engraver, but he was occasionally also active as an art dealer. Although he was born in Germany and spent the greater part of his life in Frankfurt am Main, he may, nevertheless, has regarded himself as a follower of the Dutch School. The canvas is unlined and the painting is well presented. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of retouching to the background, especially lower right. There is a repaired horizontal tear of c. 20 cm in the middle of the right side. The wooden frame is in good condition and only shows small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 60.5 x 71 cm and the size of the stretcher is 47 x 58 cm. Jacob Marrel (1614-1681) Since 1624, Jacob Marrel lived in Frankfurt am Main, where he was a pupil of Georg Flegel. Around 1630, he worked under Jan Davidsz. de Heem in Utrecht, where he mainly focused on still life painting and in 1679 he returned to Frankfurt am Main. Some paintings by Jacob Marrel are signed with his Latinized name 'Jacobus Marrellus'. Marrel's works are on display in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem and the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Karlsruhe. Ausstellung: Slater Gallery, London, 'Dutch and Flemish Masters', 25.4.1956 - 14.7.1956, Nr. 22.

MARREL, JACOB (Frankenthal 1613/1614 - 1681 Frankfurt) Still life with flowers in a terracotta vase on a pedestal. 1640. Oil on panel. Signed and dated lower left: Jacobus Marrellus f. 1640. 69.5 x 52.6 cm. Provenance: Private collection, France. Private collection, Boston, USA. With written documentation by Dr. Sam Segal. MARREL, JACOB (Frankenthal 1613/1614 - 1681 Frankfurt) Blumenstilleben in einer Terracotta-Vase auf einem Sockel. 1640. Öl auf Holz. Unten links signiert und datiert: Jacobus Marrellus f. 1640. 69,5 x 52,6 cm. Provenienz: Privatsammlung Frankreich. Privatsammlung Boston, USA.
