The third edition, with corrections, additions, and plates. London, printed for the author, (1810) - 1811. VIII, 479 S., 4 Bll. Roter Ganzledereinband mit reicher ornamentaler Vergoldung, Fileten, Fleurons und goldgeprägten Mittelstück, Innenkantenvergoldung und ornamental geprägten Rücken u. Pappband d. Zt. mit Deckeltitel in moderner Kasette mit ledernen Deckelschild (etwas berieben). Cordier, Indosinica 1107, Hill 1093 (ohne den Atlas). - Nicht bei Abbey und Nissen. - Prachtvolle und einzige Elephanten-Folio Ausgabe von William Marsdens 'History of Sumatra' die erstmals 1783 veröffentlicht wurde. Sie ist das erste Werk in englischer Sprache über diese Region. Dies ist die erste Ausgabe der dritten Auflage, die als einzige Ausgabe von dem Elefanten-Folio Atlas mit Tafeln begleitet wird. In dieser Ausgabe sind die Bilder im eindrucksvollen Großformat gedruckt, um die exotische Üppigkeit der einheimischen Flora, Fauna und Zoologie hervorzuheben, in der zweiten Ausgabe der dritten Auflage sind die Tafeln auf Quarto-Format reduziert und in den Text eingebunden. Die vier Aquatinta-Ansichten sind nach Zeichnungen von William Bell von Fort Marlborough, Sumatra, und wurden von Joseph Stadler gestochen, der vor allem für seine beeindruckende Arbeit in Thorntons The Temple of Flora (1798 - 1807) bekannt ist. Die Tafeln zeigen u.a. die Pfeffer Planze, Lanseh und Rambeh Früchte, Philippinen-Gleitflieger, Gemeiner Flugdrache, Balabac-Kantschil uva. - Titel des Textbandes mit altem Namensstempel, und kleiner Marginalie, im Textband im weißen Rand mit sauberen zeitgenössischen Marginalien eines kundigen Lesers in Sepia-Tinte. Mit dem Errata Blatt im Textband und dem Tafelverzeichnis im Tafelband. Seiten breitrandig und nur stellenweise vor allem am Rand etwas fleckig. Indonesia. - Atlas volume with 27 engraved views on 19 plate pages, including 4 aquantint etchings. II. text volume with 1 engraved. Map of Sumatra and an alphabetical plate. 2 vols. Red full leather binding with rich ornamental gilding, fillets, fleurons and gold embossed centerpiece, inner edge gilt and ornamental embossed spine and contemp. boards with cover title in modern case with leather cover label (somewhat rubbed). Splendid and only elephant folio edition of William Marsden's 'History of Sumatra' which was first published in 1783. It is the first work in English on this region. This is the first print of the third edition, which is the only edition accompanied by the elephant folio atlas with plates. In this edition, the images are printed in impressive large format to emphasize the exotic lushness of the native flora, fauna, and zoology. In the second print of the third edition, the plates are reduced to quarto format and incorporated into the text. The four aquatint views are from drawings by William Bell of Fort Marlborough, Sumatra, and were engraved by Joseph Stadler, best known for his impressive work in Thornton's The Temple of Flora (1798 - 1807). The plates show, among others, the pepper plant, lanseh and rambeh fruits, Philippine glider, common flying dragon, balabac kanchil, and others. - Title of text volume with old name stamp, and small marginalia, in text volume in white margin with neat contemporary marginalia of a knowledgeable reader in sepia ink. With the errata leaf in the text volume and the list of plates in the plate volume. Pages with wide margins and only in places a little stained especially in the margins. *
