A Map of Europe, by Mary Martin, circa 1850, cross-stitch needlework worked mostly in black thread, showing a map of Europe with coloured outlines, above 6 columns, the first and fourth detailing the kingdoms of England, Scotland, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Italy, Turkey, Greece, Russia, Prussia, Germany, and Austria, the second and fifth with corresponding chief city for each country, and the third and sixth with the corresponding religion, i.e. 'England - London - Lutherans' and 'Turkey - Constan[tinople] - Mahomedan', 8-line verse to foot flanked by stylised trees in green thread, upper left corner with maker's name, and title enclosed by a double-line octagonal frame, worked on a canvas ground, toned, period darn to top of Africa (4.5 x 2 cm), a few letters missing from verse, 59 x 39 cm (23.25 x 15.5 ins), framed and glazed (68.8 x 49.5 cm) QTY: (1) NOTE: An ususual map sampler with information about the various countries shown, and patriotic verse reading: "Into quarters the Globe we are wont to divide/To live in great Britain in Europe our pride/For Europe though least is now greatest in [l]an[d]/Next America Africa Asia we name/Then America, Africa Asia tis plain/With Europ[e] are quarters our earth doth contain/One Sun and one Moon do enlighten the whole/The Lord made them all and does them control".

              Empress Elisabeth of Austria – a gold gift box with a portrait of Princess Alexandra Amalie of Bavaria, Carl Martin Weishaupt & Söhne, Hanau, 1850

              Red, yellow and white gold, the jeweller's hallmark "CWMS" and the Hanau city hallmark stamped in the lid and base. Finely wrought, raised décor of blossoms and foliage in the three shades of gold on a partly guilloche background. Inset in the lid, an extended oval portrait of the princess, painted on porcelain in the style of Josef Karl Stieler, 1838. Dimensions 86 x 65 x 22 mm, weight 128.27 g. Contains a folded note (the fold completely torn) with a dedication from Archduchess Marie Valerie (tr.) "To my dear Louise from her faithful Valerie" in violet ink. It was apparently a gift from Princess Alexandra Amalie of Bavaria to the later Empress of Austria on the occasion of her 13th birthday on Christmas Eve 1850, which was presented to Princess Louise of Bavaria by Archduchess Marie Valerie on 10 October 1913 to mark the birth of Princess Elisabeth of Bavaria.               entitled 'WE FROLIC WHILE 'TIS MAY' to the reserve, signed 'F.M. MILLER SC LONDON 1855', depicting two youths in an embrace, on a naturalistic base carved with a bird's nest, 40cm high x 38cm wide Felix Martin Miller (1843-1923) was a well known sculptor in his day, he taught sculpture at the National Art School, South Kensington and exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London between 1842 and 1880, and at the British Institution between 1847 and 1866. The leading mid-Victorian sculptor John Henry Foley described Miller in his obituary as 'one of the few sculptors whose genius is manifest and who has produced works, chiefly bas-reliefs, that are unsurpassed by any production of their class in modern art'.               C.1850, Austrian, Martin Böch, Wien, a good 3-wt Grand Sonnerie wall clock, 72 beat. Condition: this exceptional 3-wt hung behind the piano in Dana's music room {see detail image}, and was reportedly his favorite "Vienna". Has a quality bench made movement with maintaining power, nice hand-finished beat-set, and quality 5 spoke pulleys. Dial grommets intact plus strike shutoff working; dial signature [Böch] restored by Dana. Minor shortcomings include missing "tail" for the minute hand, part of top finial base missing, corbels loose in case, sliver of seat board missing on each side. Everything there is original. Cleaned by Dana & hung in 1974. Ht 55" $3000--$4000
