      Attributed to David Martin (1737-1797) Portrait of Sir Ernest Gordon (1745-1800) in a double-breasted jacket inscribed 'Sir Ernest Gordon of Park' to label verso oil on canvas 74 x 62cm Sir Ernest Gordon was the son of James Gordon of Cobairdy, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, who took part in the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, and Mary Forbes, daughter of James, 16th Lord Forbes. In 1782, Ernest Gordon incorrectly assumed the baronetcy of Gordon of Park. The wrongful assumption of the baronetcy ceased on the death of his son, John, in 1804.

      PORTRAIT OF A LADY measurements note 93.5 by 72.5 cm., 36 1/2 by 28 3/4 in. three-quarter length, seated, wearing a cream dress, playing a mandolin signed c.l.:Martin / 1782 oil on canvas NOTE The Scottish painter David Martin was a pupil of Alan Ramsay, whom he accompanied on a tour of Italy between 1756 and 1757. On his return he based himself in London where he exhibited widely. His admission in 1780 to the Royal Company of Archers marked his return to Edinburgh and this elegant portrait is an excellent example of the high quality of portraits which he painted in the city.

      PORTRAIT OF KATHERINE SMYTHE OF METHVEN measurements note 75 by 62 cm., 29 1/2 by 24 1/4 in. half length, wearing pink dress with a lace shawl and lace cuffs oil on canvas NOTE The sitter was probably Katherine, daughter of Patrick Campbell. Lord Monzie, who married David Smythe (1711-1764) of Methven, Perthshire. The Smythes were an old Perthshire family, and David Smythe's grandfather Patrick acquired the lands of Methven in 1664, having sold his estates in Orkney.
