      Pastel Portrait of Mary Anne WIlliams Noyes attributed to James Martin ( Active 1794-1798), circa 1798 mid 19th century inscription on paper affixed to poplar board on verso reads: "Mary Anne Williams. born in Brooklyn / Conn Nov 2 1768 / Married Dr. John Noyes/ of Lyme, Conn. Nov. 1789 / died Nov.11th 1819 / This portrait was painted when she was about thirty years old by a New York artist, Mr. Martin (added pencil notation--) "A Sister of Grandmother Ingalls / Dr. W H (illegible)" pastel on paper 20 by 15 3/4 in. Please note that her mother's wedding high chest of drawers, family silver and bed linens will be sold in the next two lots. Provenance: Mary Anne Noyes was the youngest daughter of Thomas and Mary Anne Wolcott of Windsor, Connecticut (whose father Roger Wolcott, was governor of that state from 1750-1754). She was born on Williams Hill, Brooklyn, Connecticut, November 2, 1768. She married Dr. John Noyes of Lyme, Connecticut and went there to live November 17, 1789. She died November 11, 1819. They had no issue. According to family tradition to her sister Sarah Williams Ingalls to her daughter Sarah Ingalls Walker to her daughter Mary Anne Noyes Walker Huntington to her oldest son William Walker Huntington to his oldest son Walker Cheeseman Huntington to his oldest daughter Dorothy Huntington George Thence by descent to the present owner. Other Notes: Four 18th century pastel portraits representing members of the Noyes family survive in the Florence Griswold House: William Noyes Jr., his sister Abigail and their grandparents, Judge William Noyes and his wife Eunice. The portraits were also painted circa 1798 by James Martin, an English portraitist was active in American between 1794-1820.
