Titled "Madras" below. Above there is a numbering in Latin numerals: "LXXXI. Date: 19th century Description: Stormy landscape on the coast of the Bay of Bengal near Chennai. On the sea, a sinking sailing ship can be seen from which numerous rowing boats are landing on the shore. In the background is the silhouette of the city of Chennai with the prominent tower of St. Thomas Basilica. Description: Impressive steel engraving by Johann Georg Martini, signed in the plate, numbered upper right: "LXXXI", inscribed lower right: "Stahlstich von J. G. Martini Rudolstadt 1834 Madras Verlag des Bibliographischen Instituts zu Hildburghausen Eigenthum der Verleger". A storm is raging in front of the silhouette of Madras: mighty waves break on the shore, rowing boats are lifted up by the waves. On the horizon, large sailing ships fight against wind and waves. The alternation of dark clouds and glistening sunlight heightens the drama of the scene. This engraving probably appeared in Meyer's "Universum" (known for its brilliant steel engravings), published by Meyer's Bibliographical Institute in Hildburghausen.
