Nachlaß B69. Bestätigt von Maria Boeckl 69B SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 4000 - 6000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 4000 Herbert Boeckl was an Austrian artist. After graduating from high school in Klagenfurt, he went to Vienna in 1912, where he applied to the Academy of Fine Arts. When Böckl was rejected, he began studying architecture at the construction school of the Technische Hoschule (Technical College) and was a private student of Adolf Loos. Through Loos he came into contact with artists such as Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt and Carl Moll and was able to show his work for the first time in 1913 in a joint exhibition of the Österreichischen Künstlerbundes (Austrian Artists' Association) in the Pisko art salon. During the First World War, Böckl served on the Italian front in the same regiment as Bruno Grimschitz, a friend and supporter of Boeckl and later director of the Austrian Gallery in the Bevedere. After the war, Böckl married Maria Plahna, who served as a nude model for him in the first years of their marriage. After the first state examination at the Technical University in 1918, he gave up his studies, moved into a studio in Klagenfurt and took part in an exhibition by the Kunstvereins Kärnten (Carinthian Art Association) in the Künstlerhaus. Egon Schiele was enthusiastic and recommended Boeckl to the Viennese art dealer and publisher Gustav Nebehay. A contract with Nebehay secured Böckl's financial security and enabled him to travel to Berlin, Paris and Sicily for study trips. The first major presentation of his work took place as part of the Secession's autumn exhibition in 1927, where 30 oil paintings were shown. In 1935 he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, and in 1938 the artist changed the spelling of his name from Böckl to Boeckl. During the Second World War, Boeckl withdrew and took over the daily evening act instead of leading the master class. After the war he became rector. He was dismissed as rector in 1946. At the beginning of the 1950s, Boeckl began working on the monumental fresco for the Angel Chapel in Seckau Abbey. Boeckl received the Grand Austrian State Prize in 1934 and 1953, the Klimt-Ehrung der Secession in 1960 and the Golden Cross of Honour for Science and Art of the Republic of Austria and the Ring of Honour of the City of Vienna in 1964. In 1964 a major Boeckl retrospective took place at the Museum of the 20th Century. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.

                      Est: €10,000 - €12,000

JOSÉ MARÍA SERT (Barcelona, 1874 - 1945) "Seventh Beatitude" Sketch for the nave of the Epistle in Vic Cathedral, 1925-1927. Oil on canvas in the form of a lunette. Re-drawn. Work referenced in; ALBERTO DEL CASTILLO, "José María Sert, his life and work". Barcelona - Buenos Aires. 1947. Lam.106. Size: 120 x 242 (frame: 132 x 254). This work in hemispherical format is the presentation model for one of the mural paintings in Vic Cathedral belonging to the lateral lunettes of the Epistle nave. The central opening of the sketch corresponds to the architectural niche in the wall. The piece known as the VII Beatitude alludes to the words of the Gospel according to Saint Matthew (Matthew V): "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God". Dominating the centre of the scene, the imposing presence of Saint Angelo's castle can be recognised in the upper part of the lunette. To the right of the scene, flanking the lunette, we can see the figure of Saint Leo facing Attila, located in the lower part of the image. The king of the Huns is accompanied by his army, which has been structured by the artist, creating great depth in the scene. On the left-hand side of the composition, Sert portrays the saint receiving the olive branch from the hands of Saint Michael the Archangel, Saint Paul and Saint Peter, sheltered under a large tree, next to which can be seen a small little love child. The original painting of the cathedral was destroyed during the Civil War, so this sketch is an important surviving graphic document of the painter, which was subsequently used for the reconstruction of the mural. Although this work was commissioned in 1900, Sert did not present the first sketches until six years later, busy with the numerous orders he received from the aristocrats of the time. The First World War interrupted the work and once it was resumed, Sert felt he had to modify the approach, eliminating colour and therefore rethinking the perspectives in order to obtain depth. It was completed in 1929, but only seven years later it was destroyed. Shocked, Sert accepted the restoration of the cathedral, basing it this time on a set of bas-reliefs which he did not complete until the year of his death.José María Sert was one of the most sought-after and controversial painters of his time and one of the best Spanish muralists. Heir to the Catalan Renaixença and trained as a modernist, he developed a pictorial style outside the stylistic trends of his time. These characteristics make him a renovator of mural painting and a prolific artist who painted more than seven thousand square metres of cathedrals, palaces, great halls, private residences and town halls in various cities, but without doubt the work that was most present throughout his life was the decoration of Vic Cathedral. Trained with Benito Mercadé and Pere Borrell, Sert was a member of the Círculo Artístico de Sant Lluc, and later a disciple of A. de Riquer. In 1900 Torras i Bages commissioned him to paint a large mural decoration for Vic Cathedral, of which he presented sketches and preparatory canvases in 1905 and 1907 in Barcelona and Paris, of which this piece is an example. Through his exhibitions abroad, he soon acquired extraordinary prestige among the French and English aristocracy, for whom he produced sumptuous decorations. In 1908 he decorated the Sala de los Pasos Perdidos of the Palace of Justice in Barcelona, and in 1910 he presented the mural decoration of the ballroom of the Marquis of Alella (Barcelona) at the Salon d'Automne in Paris and decorated the music room of the Princess of Polignac in Paris. Two years later he exhibited an important group of works at the Salon in the French capital. In the following years he worked for Queen Victoria Eugenia (Santander) and for Robert Rotschild (Chantilly).

Marlborough Galleries, London, United Kingdom. Christie’s, New York, sale of February 16, 1984, lot 221. Acquired directly from the above sale. The Collection of Sidney Rothberg, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Exhibition Kestner-Gessellschaft, Hannover, January 23- February 22, 1970. Marlborough Fine Art, London, April-May 1970. Literature Wieland Schmied, R.B. Kitaj Katalog, an exhibition catalogue, Kestner-Gesellschaft, Hannover, 1970, no. 143-146. Lot Essay The following five lots are early portraits by the Cleveland-born artist Robert Brooks Kitaj, who spent much of his life in Britain, where he coined the term ‘School of London’ to describe a group of London-based artists he brought together in the pursuit of figurative painting. The group included Lucien Freud, Francis Bacon, Leon Kossoff, and David Hockney, with whom the artist was particularly close. Kitaj’s work defies easy categorization, and he became a somewhat polarizing figure in the art world – both revered, as well as strongly criticized as a pseudo-intellectual and egoist. Indeed, Kitaj always maintained a somewhat outsider status whose challenging works pay homage to literary references and allusions, cultural and historic events, and sometimes include explanatory texts. To wit, the subject of lot 196 is the famous  1st-3rd century alchemist, while lot 199 is a nod to Marxist theory. As art historian and author Marco Livingstone has noted: “Contemptuous of the dumbing down of culture, Kitaj presupposed the existence of an intelligent and intellectually curious audience willing to meet him halfway in his divagations through painting into areas of human experience habitually assumed to be outside the realm of painting. Fragmentation was dear to Kitaj’s heart: indeed the title of a small painting of 1964 (…) His Cult of the Fragment, (lot 197) could serve as an epitaph for his lifelong quest for understanding through accumulations of motifs, references and stylistic quotations.” The Kitaj lots on offer here were each exhibited at Marlborough Galleries. In 1963, just one year prior to their execution, Kitaj held his inaugural solo exhibition there, which he entitled ‘Pictures with commentary. Pictures without commentary.’ The unadorned, straightforward portraits presented here, devoid of color and modest in scale, reveal Kitaj’s skill as a draughtsman in oil paint, of which the famed art critic Robert Hughes once said “Kitaj can draw better than any man alive.”
