      Oishi Matora (1794 - 1833) Japanese Woodblock 1829

      Est: $400 - $600

A Japanese surimono woodblock print by Oishi Matora (1794 - 1833). Surimono were deluxe Japanese prints often commissioned by poetry circles and published privately. They represented the peak in Japanese woodblock printing techniques. It was costly to produce them, which resulted in very limited editions, with just a handful of impressions for each design. This woodblock was done by Oishi Matora in 1829, during the Edo period. It’s ink and color on paper, and in the background it shows a man stretching his arms. In the foreground, it shows a woman and writing paper on a low table. In Japanese the top part reads “Shirakawa yonda towa, Hoshi araitaso”, which means “priest calling out for a bath”, and the bottom reads “Ishinaka nide, Okiata shomotsu no, Yawara ka sa”, which means “writing paper, how soft it is”. The writing in the three columns on the left mentions a mountain slope, a plum tree and garden, Shinto religious rites, and a compilation of two poems in one volume. Overall size is 18 1/2 x 13 3/4 in., sight size is 7 x 4 3/4 in. CONDITION - By registering to bid for this auction (either in-house or online) and/or placing a bid in this auction.
