Joseph A. Maturo does not allow himself to be dragged along by the artistic trends prevailing in Italy at the beginning of the 20th century, but remains faithful to his own realistic-poetic language. This is an intimate portrait of a mother and her son. It is a work worked by means of a marked, moving and thick brushstroke, and a vibrant colouring, in no way subordinated to the drawing, which is almost totally absent from the work. It is a work with a bright and lively light, full of maternal love, calm and tranquillity. A prominent illustrator, Joseph A. Maturo studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples before emigrating to the United States in 1895. In 1934, the Fox Film Corp offices in New York hired him to design and create illustrations for film posters, a job that lasted after Fox merged with Twentieth Century, and which led Maturo to work assiduously, becoming one of the most important international film illustrators.
