      Meyer Matzkin (1880-1976). Portrait of a lady in a red dress. 1932. Oil on canvas, size 153 x 102 cm (60 1/4 x 40 1/4 inches). Frame dimensions 187 x 116 cm (73 2/3 x 45 2/3 inches). Signed and dated lower left. Meyer Matzkin (portrait, still life, landscape, seashore, and floral easel painting, mural, and teaching) was born in Svintsyan, Lithuania, and immigrated to the United States with his parents. In 1904 the Matzkins settled in Brookline, MA. as an adult, he studied nights at the Copley Society and figure painting at Massachusetts College of Art. His paintings have been exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1919, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston among numerous others. His subjects include portraits, landscapes, seascapes and flower still lives, largely painted between Boston, Gloucester, and Cape Ann. Over his lifetime he taught many students privately at his studio at 61 Hanover Street, Boston. Matzkin was once quoted as saying ‘You can't teach art, only the mechanics of art. Art must come from the heart and artists are born, not made in the art factories of the art schools.’ He always said, ‘Of about one thousand students, only about two will someday come out true artists.’ Many of his exhibits were shown at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts in New York, and the Chicago Institute of Fine Arts.

Signed bottom left and dated 1920 (sic). 30'' x 25'' [Henry Ford lent violinist Beatrice Griffen the famed Siberian Stradavrious for her Detroit symphony debut and thereafter. As is often the case with Matzkin's work, this portrait makes several tongue and cheek references, including to the Mona Lisa with a background reminiscent of da Vinci's famous work.
