Attributed to James Maubert (Irish, 1666-1746) Attributed to James Maubert (Irish, 1666-1746) Portrait of the Holdsworth children of Devon, from left: Mary (b.1727), Sarah (b.1728), Arthur (b.1733) and Anne (b.1731), all full length, Mary holding a basket of flowers and Arthur seated on a velvet cushion oil on canvas 104 x 130cm, in a George III-style carved giltwood frame Provenance: Christie's London, 22 November 2006. Arthur Holdsworth was born to Arthur Holdsworth (Senior, born 1701) and his wife, the former Marcella Gibbs, and he later married Rebecca Taylor and they had six sons. Anne Holdsworth was born in 1731 at Dartmouth; she married Robert Newman. Later the family went into politics and there is a portrait of a descendant, Arthur Howe Holdsworth, by William Brockedon in the National Portrait Gallery. The family originally came from Yorkshire and a descendant, a vicar, moved to Devon in 1620. One of the sons of that vicar (also an Arthur, this appears to have been the only male name!) became Mayor of Dartmouth in 1672. They were very successful merchants and had properties in Portugal and Newfoundland. The family home was Widdicombe House, near Torcross (Listed Grade II*) originally built circa 1720-25 and enlarged in 1820. They also owned Brooke Hall, Dartmouth. There is a Holdsworth Room in Dartmouth Museum, Devon. We are grateful to Hugh Belsey for his assistance with the catalogue entry.

PORTRAIT OF COLONEL GEORGE BATE, GOVERNOR OF KINSALE (D. 1725) measurements note 123 by 98cm., 48 ½ by 38½in. Three quarter length, standing in a landscape, wearing a tunic and a metal breast plate, a skirmish beyond Signed l.l. beneath helmet: ...aubert Pinx Oil on canvas EXHIBITED The Glorious Revolution? The Fall and Rise of the British Army 1660-1740, National Army Museum, October 1988-March 1989, no. 116 NOTE The sitter was appointed to the Governorship of Charles Fort by King George I in 1713, and lived there until his death in 1725. It is likely that the present portrait, a rare example of a signed work by Maubert, was painted circa 1714 on the occasion of his appointment as Governor of the most important defence fort in Ireland. The sitter's distinguished military career began with his appointment as lieutenant in Colonel Henry Rowe's Regiment of Foot in 1695. In 1702 he was promoted to Captain Henry Holt's Regiment of Marines, before transfering to Thomas Brudenell's Regiment of Foot. He served under Churchill as Major in 1707, becoming Lieutenant Colonel in 1708. He remained in Ireland until his death in 1725. Maubert is thought to have been a native of Ireland, and George Vertue records that he received his "first instructions in drawing and painting" from Gaspar Smitz "in Dublin".

      Est: £25,000 - £30,000

JAMES MAUBERT 1666-1746 PORTRAIT OF CATHERINE SANCROFT (C. 1716-1780) AND HER SISTER ELIZABETH (1714-1788) Signed l.l..: J Maubert Pinxit Oil on canvas PROVENANCE Probably commissioned by William Sancroft (1683-1720), the sitter's father; Be descent to Sarah Wogan, daughter of Catherine Sancroft and John Wogan, who married the Rev. Gerva Holmes; Thence by descent to John Sancroft Holmes (1847-1920), Gawdy Hall LITERATURE AND REFERENCES Prince Duleep Singh, Portraits in Norfolk Houses, 1927, Vol. I, p. 24, illus. opposite p. 160 CATALOGUE NOTE The sitters were the daughters of William Sancroft of Fressingfield Hall, Suffolk and his wife Catherine, daughter of Sir John Cotton of Lenwade. The Sancrofts were a distinguished Suffolk family. William's great uncle, William Sancroft (1617-1693) was the Dean of St Paul's who masterminded the rebuilding of St Paul's Cathedral and who later became Archbishop of Canterbury. The two daughters were substantial heiresses, having inherited from their father the Suffolk manors of Fressingfield, Ufford, Chepenhall and Metfield. The eldest daughter Elizabeth married John Wogan, who came from a Pembrokeshire family and owned Gawdy Hall in Norfolk, as well as a house in Wigmore Street and at Boulton in Pembrokeshire. On the death of Elizabeth and her husband, the Suffolk estates were sold and Gawdy Hall passed to the Reverend Gervas Holmes, Vicar of Fressingfield, who married Elizabeth's daughter Sarah. According to George Vertue, the painter Maubert, who was probably born in Ireland, studied in Dublin with the Flemish artist Gaspar Smitz. This ambitious conversation piece is one of his finest works, comparable to the two portraits which he painted for the Bathurst family (one sold at Sotheby's on 23 June 1971). He was admired by Vertue, particularly for his ability to paint flowers - 'a good Ingenious civil man... he not only paints from the Life but is very skillful in painting of fruits & flowers. his draperys are well dispos'd & natural'.' (George Vertue's Notebooks, Walpole Society. Vol. XXII, 1934, p. 28).
