      The lot includes: 1. A 1944 etching by Joseph Mauborgne (1881 -1991). Titled: Old Christ Church, Shrewsbury N. J. and numbered 207/300 at the lower left, signed by the artist and dated ’49 at the lower right. Framed. Attached on the back is a sheet of paper with a photograph of the artist and his biography. 2. A vintage framed herbarium, signed at the lower right: Cheveux de Vénus. 3. A limited edition signed print by Helen Stuart. Signed in pencil and numbered 69/250 at the lower right, signed and dated in print: Helen Stuart’98 at the lower right. 4. A 19th-century wood-engraving Le pesage du charbon a Madrid [Weighing coal in Madrid] after Gustav Dore. Signed in print at the lower left, and signed ETTL at the lower right.

      Major General, Joseph Mauborgne (1881 - 1971, America), Aquatint etching titled, "Winter," showing good contrast between lights and darks and with fine half-tones. Numbered 15 of 200, dated: (19)55, dedicated. Framed: 14.5"h x 10.5"w. US Army, Major General Joseph Mauborgne, studied fine art until his enlistment to the Army in 1903. He graduated from the Signal Officers Course and in 1912, while stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas he installed a radio transmitter on an airplane and achieved the first successful air to ground radio transmission. He continued to make advancements in communication for the Army and rose to the positions of chief of the Signal Corps Engineering and Research Division and as commander of the Signal Corps laboratory in the Bureau of Standards. During the early 1930s, Mauborgne was Signal Officer for the 9th Corps Area and later Director of the Signal Corps Aircraft Factory, Wright Field, Ohio. Mauborgne published a solution for the Playfair cypher (a type of code). Then, in 1919, Mauborgne and Gilbert Vernon of Bell Laboratories invented the one-time pad, a code technique which still cannot be broken if used properly. As Chief of Signal (1939-1941), Mauborgne supported the mass production of radar. In addition to his professional career, Mauborgne also attended the Chicago Art Institute, between 1922 and1923, in Washington D.C. he studied at the Corcoran Art Galley. His work is held by the United States Military Academy and he exhibited in galleries in Washington, San Francisco, and Dayton, Ohio.
