There is an unspoken thrill of keeping one's head and whole body under water for a spell. Just the soft sonic and an aquatic numbness that seems to keep one in a different realm, without all the aid and encumbrances of scuba-diving paraphernalia. Here, the figure clad in a light black dress is curled up like a baby in the womb, legs crossed slightly at an angle, in a séance-like meditation, eyes closed. A large marine creature glides by from the top left, as if to make sure that everything is Ok, while another larger creature, a whale perhaps, looms in the backdrop. Yes, like in life, the immediate living environment is fraught with many dangers, real and imagined. With Hope, what goes down will come up. Self-taught Latif Maulan's art career reads like a fairy-tale. Somewhat a drifter having worked as a dishwasher, waiter, advertising designer, shopping-complex display artist, he was given a resident's artist stint in Kuala Lumpur, and a fulltime artist in 1992. He decided to venture abroad. To the Big Apple where he sold two large works in the Soloat Collector's Party at Excel Gallery, New York (2000), Australia (2001), a year in East Sussex in Britain as a graphic designer (2002), and six months in Plymouth (2013), where he showed at the Barbican Gallery there. First solo, Parallel Universe, at the Art Case Galleries, Kuala Lumpur, 2006. In 2006, he had already moved into Photo-Realism figuratives from his Nature and still-life themes. A finalist in the 2009 MEAA competition, he won big in the Redbull EhWauBulan showcase in 2016.

        Latif Maulan (b. 1974) The Ribs, 2010

        Est: RM6,000 - RM10,000

A dreamlike scene, The Ribs, is a surreal composition which explores the anatomy of the upper body. Mixing several elements such as the half of a rib cage, and the slender body of a woman with her head turned away from the viewer, a mysterious atmosphere is evoked through the piece. Self-taught Latif Maulan's art career reads like a fairy-tale. Est: RM5,000 - RM9,000

In Frozen, we see the image of a strikingly beautiful woman, transitioning between the air and water elements, as if to suggest an intangible source of transformation within one’s mindset and emotional state. Throughout the journey of life, you will have to gather all your strength, to delve deeply into the inner self, and learn to trust the voice within, undisturbed by the influence of the external world. Thankfully, it's just a dream, and things will only get better. Self-taught Latif Maulan’s art career reads like a fairy-tale. The world of the Internet is truly without limits, with its information overload and world-wide-web access to anything under the sun, or sea. Here, a young-looking woman in white T-shirt and jeans seems lost in the cyber dreamworld, where various icons and apps pop up and Google-ing, and several Windows panels reveal on-going processes such as Download, Transferring, Progress. It is a world where all other worlds meet. Self-taught Latif Maulan’s art career reads like a fairy-tale. On offer here is a scene comprising the king of fruits and stunning waterfalls in a lush deep green tropical forest. Durian is regarded as Malaysian favourite fruits. To be eating tropical fruit durian accompanied by gushing waterfalls is the best that life could offer. This piece is captured with such tranquility from the artist’s perspective. Self-taught Latif Maulan made headlines when he won the Redbull EhWauBulan showcase in 2016 though he has been known for his topsy-turvy figure under water. He was also a finalist in the prestigious Malaysia Emerging Artist Award competition in 2009. Arranged on a piece of crumpled batik sarong is a nearly ripped pineapple, few fresh mandarin oranges thus, one was left exposed in flesh and a bottle of 100 Plus. The composition creates a beautiful mess suggesting that someone might have left the scene to continue working. The batik is of the authentic east coast design. Renowned for his fine skills in still life, figures and nature, Latif often injects an essence of his cultural background through his artworks. Est: RM10,000 - RM18,000

It is a strange combo of a metal tepak sireh (betel leaf container) paraphernalia including the nut cutter, buah pinang and a comb of bananas on a tacky tablecloth on an odd-shaped antique-looking desk. Just a random display for a still-life exercise, where meanings could be miscued. Obviously, the artist Latif Maulan could not resist a banana leaving the skin together with the others plucked from the backyard of the studio. In 2006, Latif, a self-taught artist, had honed some fine skills in figuratives, still-life and Nature. The same year, he held his first solo, Parallel Universe, at the Art Case Galleries, Kuala Lumpur. Bananas are in abundance in tropical climes. The tepak sireh is an anachronism of cultural heritage, related mainly to the Malays. Apart from the now abhorred practices of betel leaf chewing, the tepak sireh is still used in Malay society as a perfunctory ritual in proposing, engagement and marriage, and sometimes even royal ceremonies, and is / was taken as a symbol of friendship. Apart from the betel leaf, there are the areca nut, lime paste, gambier and shredded tobacco. Self-taught Latif Maulan made headlines when he won the Redbull EhWauBulan showcase in 2016 though he has been known for his topsy-turvy figure under water. A grim picture of modernisation — more specifically, what it robs us of. Pangolins, tigers and elephants have been hunted for their meat or various body parts, their numbers severely dwindling. Coupled with deforestation, leading to habitat destruction, these creatures have effectively been chased out from their homes, which in turn makes them more visible targets. In the midst of this, a lady lies, oblivious to the harm caused. In the name of development, Mother Nature is sacrificed, and the bottomline is Money, Money is the name of the game. Sooner or later, danger could be at our very doorstep, our actions coming back to haunt us. Self-taught Latif Maulan’s art career reads like a fairy-tale. Marbles are a game of chance. It was a favourite children’s pastime before the advent of computers and the Internet. Now you can still play marbles, but digitally. Without the physical touch of the component of glass, clay, plastic/agate and even steel. Self-taught Latif Maulan is drawn to marbles because it presents a challenge to reproduce on paper, with the play of light, reflection, transparent quality and patterns with his own Photo-Realism techniques. This with some eight marbles, he composed on a random spread of newspapers, with different headlines unrelated to the painting’s theme. There are several games connected with marbles, including Ringer, where competing players take turns to knock out other players’ marbles placed incde a circle (usually on the sand) with their own marbles. Latif made his Henry Butcher debut on his marbles painting on April 21, 2015, when his 2011 work sold for a premium of RM14,300, from a low estimate of only RM4,000.

The legend of Si -Tanggang serves as a cautionary tale in Latif Maulan's Sesuci Batu about an unfilial son cursed by the mother and who turned into stone. The finger is pointed at some youths today who deny their parents of the care and love their parents lavished on them, who go on holidays during festive breaks instead of balik kampung to check on their frail parents, or worse, who under the influence of drugs, subject their parents to threats and even physical harm. Si-Tanggang was also turned into a movie in 1961, directed by Dato Haji Jamil Sulong and starring Sarimah and Jins Samsuddin. It is featured in the book, Magic (Macmillan, New York, 1900), written by Walter William Skeat.Latiff is largely self-taught who honed his skills through taking on challenges all over the world. He started as a display artist designer in a shopping complex in Bentong, then a resident artist in a gallery in Kuala Lumpur. In an exhibition at the Collector's Party at Excel Gallery in New York in 2000, he sold two works, and followed up with a visit to Australia in 2001. He spent a year in East Sussex in Britain as a graphic designer in 2002, another six months in Plymouth in 2003, with an exhibition at the Barbican Gallery there. On his return, he was confident enough to go fulltime into art, and doing Photo-Realism figuratives from 2006 instead of still-lifes and Nature. In 2006, he had his first solo at the Art Case Galleries. He finally hit paydirt when he won the Redbull eh wah bulan art showcase.
