Alfred Henry Maurer Sold at Auction Prices

Figure painter, Porträtmaler, Painter, Landscape painter, Still life painter, b. 1868 - d. 1932

(born 1868 New York City; died 1932 New York City) American painter. Alfred Henry Maurer is known as one of the first American artists to be heavily influenced by European Modernism. In 1884 he attended the National Academy of Design in New York. His painting style early in his career was traditional, influenced by such American artists as John Singer Sargent and James Whistler. From 1897-1914 he lived in Paris, studying at the Academie Julian. He befriended other artist expatriates there, including Arthur Dove and Gertrude and Leo Stein. It was with the Steins that he met Henri Matisse and was introduced to Fauvism. From 1905 on he began to experiment with avant-garde aesthetics and his works gained the attention of art dealers back in the United States. In 1909 his work was exhibited at Alfred Steiglitz’s Gallery 291 and in 1913 his work was included in the New York Armory Show. Maurer returned to New York with the outbreak of World War I in 1914, however he continued to develop his style, and in the 1920s he experimented with Cubism and Abstractionism which was still quite unpopular and controversial in America. Despite receiving considerable success during his career, and being able to sell all of his work to art dealer Ernest Weyhe in 1924 for much needed profit, Maurer commited suicide in 1932.

        Est: $1,000 - $1,750

Alfred Henry Maurer (1868-1932) was an American modernist painter known for his innovative contributions to the art world. Born in New York City, Maurer's artistic journey evolved from Impressionism to a unique style that bridged the gap between Post-Impressionism and abstraction. In his early career, Maurer was influenced by Impressionism and painted scenes of city life and portraits. However, his style underwent a transformation after exposure to Post-Impressionist and Fauvist movements during his trips to Europe. This exposure led him to experiment with bold colors, simplified forms, and a more abstract approach to composition.Maurer's work often featured still lifes, landscapes, and figures, all infed with his distinctive e of color and geometric shapes. His art became more abstract over time, with a foc on flat planes of color and simplified shapes, foreshadowing the abstract art movements that would follow. He was one of the early American artists to embrace abstraction, a trend that gained prominence in the early 20th century. His contributions to the Armory Show of 1913, a landmark exhibition introducing European modern art to America, played a pivotal role in introducing American audiences to modernist movements.Maurer's legacy lies in his willingness to embrace new artistic concepts and evolve his style. He was an influential figure in the development of modern art in the United States, and his work continues to be appreciated for its forward-thinking and pioneering spirit. Sold "after" Maurer. Oil on canvas. Measures 24 x 36 (image).

ALFRED MAURER "Still Life" (1920s Oil)

        Est: $6,000 - $10,000

Alfred Henry Maurer (New York, 1868-1932) Still Life, circa 1920s Oil on board 18" x 21 1/2" Signed "A.H. Maurer" to the bottom right. The reverse of the frame has a window displaying the tag of Erhard Weyhe, a New York dealer who represented Maurer beginning in 1924 and arranged annual exhibitions for Maurer until 1931. The glazed frame measures 22" x 25 1/2" x 1 1/4". Alfred Maurer has been described as "the first American Modernist painter," with his style evolving from Tonalism to Fauvism to Cubism. The son of a commercial lithographer, Maurer studied with William Merritt Chase and John Quincy Adams Ward before moving to Paris in 1897 to attend the Acadamie Julien. There in the heart of the modern art world, Maurer's artistic talent and style fourished and developed, and he created friendships with Gertrude and Leo Stein, Paul Cezanne, and Henri Matisse. He participated in significant modern exhibitions including the 1907 Salon d'Automne and Armory Show of 1913. This period in his career was abruptly interrupted with the onset of World War I, sending him back to New York, where the American market for modern art had hardly begun. With the hurried repatriation, Maurer lost most of his work; he suddenly found himself critically ignored and thrust into an acutely stressful relationship living with his father, who disdained modern art. Nevertheless, Maurer helped pave the development of American Cubism throughout the 1920s, with colorful abstract compositions of figures and of still life (this painting being from that period). Tragically, his personal and professional frustrations culminated when his father passed away, and he took his own life soon after in 1932. His career and work, though appreciated by his peers, was largely ignored by the American market and critics until later reappraisal.

Alfred Henry Maurer (1868-1932): Still life

        Est: $1,000 - $2,000

watercolor on paper, framed and glazed; signed lower left; sight: 15 1/2 x 19 1/2 in. (39.4 x 49.5 cm.), Frame: 21 3/4 x 25 3/4 in. (55.2 x 65.4 cm.) (born 1868 New York City; died 1932 New York City) American painter. In 1909 his work was exhibited at Alfred Steiglitz's Gallery 291 and in 1913 his work was included in the New York Armory Show.

ALFRED H. MAURER Girl in a Green Coat.

        Est: $7,000 - $10,000

ALFRED H. MAURER Girl in a Green Coat. Tempera on linen mounted on board, circa 1921. 274x170 mm; 10 3/4x6 3/4 inches. Signed in tempera, upper left recto, and signed in crayon, verso. Provenance: Estate of Arthur B. Davies, New York, 1928-30; sold in the estate's sale, American Art Association, New York, April 16-17, 1929, lot 361, with the stamp on the frame back; purchased at the previous sale by architect Duncan Candler, New York; private collection, New York. According to Judith Zilczer, in her article "Arthur B. Davies: The Artist as Patron," appearing in The American Art Journal, Summer 1987, Davies (1862-1928) had first purchased a sketch by Maurer (1868-1932) in April 1909 from Alfred Stieglitz's 291 in New York. Davies continued to support artists in Stieglitz's circle, including Marsden Hartley (1877-1943). The current work is an example of Maurer's technique of painting on his "made" canvases. Seeking to emulate the Old Masters, Maurer began to experiment with materials in the early 1900s. To create the "made" canvas, Maurer stretched linen (or other fabric scrap) over a wood frame and cardboard, coated it with glue and set it with dental plaster. Elizabeth McCausland opined that Maurer intended these works to appear filmy, dingey, and spotted with "freckles" under the layer of gesso, only eliciting more outcries from his conservative detractors. Maurer adopted his "made" canvas technique in his Paris years and continued the practice after returning to America in 1914. Maurer's first paintings in his so-called "Girl" series debuted in 1921 at the Salon of Independent Artists, New York. These long-necked women are often mistakenly attributed to the influence of Amedeo Modigliani. Given that the reference frames of the artists' careers do not match up, McCausland wrote that instead, Maurer was more likely inspired by Botticelli's Venuses with elongated necks. Since Modigliani's works did not reach the United States until 1920, McCausland wrote empathetically, "Let Maurer have the last word in the controversy. 'Who is this man Modigliani?' he is often quoted as asking."
