    • Julius Maurer (1855-1922), Flock of sheep on a Lakeshore, 1885
      May. 18, 2015

Julius Maurer (1855-1922), Flock of sheep on a Lakeshore, 1885

      Est: €2,400 - €3,000

Oil on wood Germany, 1885 Julius Maurer (1855-1922) – German animal painter Signed, dated and inscribed lower left ‘Jul. Maurer 1885 München’ In gold painted ornament frame Dimensions: 40 x 50 cm Good condition Very beautiful, finely painted depiction of several sheep in a picturesque landscape; paintings by Julius Maurer are traded on the international auction market In this painting from 1885 a sheep family determines the center foreground. The parent sheep are highlighted by a single ray of sunlight that could penetrate the heavily overcast sky, and thus singled out of their shady environment. The finely modeled structure of their fur comes exceedingly beautiful into its own in the warm light and forms a contrast to the less fine, more summarily captured landscape with a picturesque lake, trees and a mountain range on the horizon. The painting is signed, dated and inscribed lower left ‘Jul. Maurer 1885 München’. It bears partially minor craquelure, several retouched spots and areas, especially in the sky and in the edge areas, as well as slight framing traces. It is provided with a newer varnish and overall in good age-appropriate condition. Aside from slight signs of wear the frame bears occasional small material losses and is in good overall in good condition. The painting measures 40 x 50 cm. The framed dimensions are 64 x 73.5 cm. Julius Maurer (1855-1922) Julius Maurer was born in Stuttgart as the son of the painter Friedrich Maurer. In 1873 he began his studies at the Art Academy in Munich. His teachers were Alexander Strähuber, Ludwig von Löfftz and Otto Seitz. Later he trained further, among others with the animal painter Anton Braith, who influenced Maurer's work. Depictions of animals in landscapes are also a key subject in Julius Maurer's work. (fea) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
