      • MOSHE MAURER (1891-1971), THE HARVEST
        Jun. 06, 2024

        MOSHE MAURER (1891-1971), THE HARVEST

        Est: £80 - £120

MOSHE MAURER (1891-1971)THE HARVEST Oil on boardSigned (lower left)45 x 40cm (17½ x 15½ in.)Growing up in a paintbrush factory alongside his father, Moshe Maurer was surrounded by artists from a young age. He continued the family trade when he moved to London in 1940, making and selling brushes to artists, without ever turning to art himself. It was his wife's unfortunate death in 1962 that spurred Maurer to pick up a brush and paint; she was very keen for him to explore his creativity and put his product to use. He captured his Russian childhood upbringing through the simplistic quality of his work - which has been characterised as 'naïve' art - keeping the memory of his wife and traditional Orthodox Jewish upbringing alive. Finding peace in his art practice, Maurer wrote that he 'woke up in a paradise painting, and through it have found rest, consolation, relaxation and inner satisfaction.' He retired his brush business due to illness and turned to painting full time. In 1955, he had his first solo exhibition at St George's Gallery in London and exhibited in mixed shows with the Artists International Association (AIA), the Royal Society of British Artists, the London Group and the Ben Uri Gallery, where he had a solo exhibition in 1957. Within the first ten years, Maurer had exhibited internationally, with works exhibited in the Netherlands, the USA, and Switzerland, alongside works by Perle Hessing, Dora Holzhandler and Scottie Wilson.Measurements do not include the frame unless specified.
