ARTIST: SASCHA MAURER (1897-1961) SIZE: 27 5/8 x 41 3/8 in./70 x 105 cm PRINTER: Plampin Litho. DESCRIPTION: In its heyday, the New York, New Haven, & Hartford Railroad's main line sizzled with famous trains shuttling tycoons and business leaders between Boston's South Station and New York City's Grand Central Terminal. In the 1930s, the New Haven ordered a fleet of steam locomotives of the Hudson type (four lead wheels, six drivers, and four trailing wheels). These massive engines took advantage of the latest in steam technology, providing increased tractive effort and horsepower for more rapid acceleration and faster speed. Not that any of this would have mattered to this courteously overjoyed lad making his way towards the slopes, but he certainly would have appreciated the fairly instant gratification the fleet provided. SASCHA MAURER (1897-1961) NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR / THRU GRAND CENTRAL GATEWAY. Circa 1939. 41 1/2x27 inches, 105 1/2x68 1/2 cm. Kelly, Nason, Inc., New York. Condition B / B-: large stain in lower left image and text; losses, extensive flaking, repaired tears and creases at edges, into image; extensive creases and abrasions in image and along vertical and horizontal folds. Mounted on old linen. A painter who emigrated from Germany, Maurer brought the European tradition of Modernist poster design to America. Although best known for his ski posters, Maurer also did a lot of poster work for both the New Haven Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad. For the latter, he designed two posters promoting travel to the New York World's Fair, each with a similar bird's-eye view concept of Manhattan and the famed Trylon and Perisphere. We believe this to be his only image for the New York Central Line, featuring Grand Central Terminal and the New York Central's pride, the 20th Century Limited. Rare. This same image was used as the cover lot for Swann's inaugural Rare and Important Travel Poster auction in 1999. It has only come up for sale once at auction since.

Condition B / B+: replaced loss through lower left corner, affecting printer's mark; repaired tears, replaced losses and restoration in margins; minor creases and abrasions in image. The New England coast viewed in the silhouette of a speeding locomotive. "The New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company, commonly known as the New Haven Railroad or simply, 'The New Haven,' operated in the states of New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. The New Haven operated freight and passenger trains over a Boston - New York City main line and a number of branch lines" (www.nhrta.org). "Maurer's finished design communicated the ideas of modernity and vacation fun in one remarkable image. It is one of the few American poster designs to effectively integrate the appeal of technology and destination" (Zega, p. 114). Sascha Maurer did a lot of poster work for both the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New Haven Railroad. Rare. We could find only two other copies at auction in the last 20 years. Zega cover and p. 116.

        New Haven R.R. / New England. 1938.

        Est: $1,700 - $2,000

ARTIST: SASCHA MAURER (1897-1961) SIZE: 28 x 41 7/8 in./71.2 x 106.4 cm PRINTER: Litho. Co., Long Island City, NY DESCRIPTION: "In practice, the travel poster proved an elusive medium that few artists mastered. Maurer's work for the New Haven Railroad placed him among that select group. He characterized the poster as a speed medium, where first impressions were everything. 'Few colors, vivid, attention-compelling; striking, well-disposed composition, short and smashing copy.' These, he argued, 'are the attributes that make a poster successful’" (Travel by Train, xi). Indeed, this summery design transposes the coastline onto the face of the train, creating a high-contrast, high-fun incentive to visit New England. (Art Deco; Travel; Railway; American)
