«The navigator, surprised by the fate that had been handed out to him but calm in the conviction of his innocence, questions the messenger who comes to announce his return to Spain. A proud Cacique shakes his left hand as a sign of support and appears to challenge the Spanish emissary of having the slightest proof to justify these infamous chains while his companion weeps on the shoulder of Columbus. Their attitude alone demonstrates that the accusations of greed and cruelty hanging over the heroes were unjustified. In fact, the episode took place in 1500 when Francisco de Bobadilla, sent to Haiti by the catholic monarchs, arrested Columbus who was accused of mismanagement, send him back to Spain in chains where he was partially cleared. The Native Americans' compassion, not historically proven, became a favoured theme in the 19th century (including iconographically towards women). Glorifying the generous and noble savage, the image transforms him in a favourable light next to the conqueror, adorned with these same virtues.» Annick Notter Estimation 4 000 - 6 000 €

          Est: £10,000 - £15,000

EROTICA -- DEVERIA, Achille, JOHANNOT, Antoine, MAURIN, Nicolas, NANTEAU and others. [Romantic Album. Paris, c.1850.] 99 lithographs and engravings, mostly hand-coloured and some varnished, 1 hand-coloured photograph, 1 watercolour, and 1 oil, mounted into a 2° album (350 x 280mm), 2 of these with 'porte et fenêtre' flaps, bound in later tan buckram. A UNIQUE AND UNUSUALLY EXTENSIVE ALBUM OF EXPLICIT EROTIC SCENES, comprising hand-coloured lithographs, a small oil painting, a watercolour and a hand-coloured photograph, mostly produced in the 1830s and 1840s, and assembled mid century. Many of the lithographs are full size, and represent the work of the leading French artists, in particular Deveria, indulging the growing demand for 'dirty pictures'. The plates include the famous 'Grand bal paré et masqué', and two with peep flaps. Such albums rarely appear for sale, and often include considerably fewer illustrations.
