Antonij (Anton) Mauve (1838-1888) was born in Zaandam. At 16, he went to Haarlem where he was apprenticed to Pieter Frederik van Os, a specialist in painting cattle, followed by Wouter Verschuur who painted horses. Mauve and Paul Gabriel often went into the country to paint from nature. At twenty he started visiting Oosterbeek, a village that attracted many artists. In 1871, he took a studio in The Hague. For a while, he taught Vincent van Gogh, to whom he was related by marriage. In 1882, Mauve began visiting Laren for the summer, eventually moving there in 1885. By that time his work was widely known and sought-after by collectors in Holland and abroad. His landscapes with sheep were especially popular in America; interestingly, a distinction was made between 'sheep coming' and the slightly less expensive 'sheep going'. Mauve’s evocative landscapes place him firmly in the Hague School. Completely framed in original frame.

Zaandam, 1838 - Arnhem, 1888 Paesaggio con contadina e animali a riposo Firmato A Mauve f. in basso a destra Olio su tela, cm 80X124 Provenienza: Milano, collezione privata Mauve fu un pittore olandese appartenente alla corrente detta 'Scuola Grigia' e uno degli esponenti più rilevanti della Scuola dell'Aia, la controparte olandese della scuola di pittori di Barbizon in Francia. Trascorse la sua giovinezza ad Haarlem, dove fu allievo del pittore di animali Pieter Frederik van Os (1808-1892) dal 1854 circa al 1857, studiò anche con i pittori Wouterus Verschuur e Paul Gabriël. Si stabilì ad Amsterdam nel 1865 e si trasferì all'Aia nel 1871. Maestro del colore, su di lui ebbe una significativa influenza il celebre cugino Vincent van Gogh; i due studiarono insieme negli anni 1881-82 e il maestro lo definì un grande interprete della bella e grigia campagna olandese. Nelle sue tele, realizzate en plein air, riusciva a catturare straordinari effetti di luce dai toni color argento, i soggetti si riferiscono alla vita rurale dove è presente un forte legame tra l'uomo e la natura. Catalogue Note: Colonel Charles Clifton (American, 1853-1928) was a major figure in shaping the automotive industry during its first decades. In 1897, he joined the George N. Pierce company - at that time a bicycle wheel manufacturer - and stayed on when it was reorganized as the Pierce-Arrow Motor Company, becoming chairman of the company’s board of directors in 1916. Clifton was also the founding president of the National Automotive Chamber of Commerce. Clifton joined the Albright Art Gallery Board in 1914, serving initially on the finance committee before becoming vice president and then president, a role he held from 1918 until his death in 1928. In addition to his dedication to the Buffalo AKG, Clifton also served as president of Buffalo General Hospital, and during World War I, he was president of the Allied War Relief and of the Fatherless Children of France. In recognition of his support, especially for children orphaned by the war, Clifton was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French government.

Anton Mauve, Schäfer mit seiner Herde, wohl in Laren/ Nordholland, Aquarell um 1880, gerahmt Anton Mauve, 1838 Zaandam - 1888 Arnhem, führender niederländischer Landschaftsmaler der Haager Schule zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts, hier: Impressionistische Herbstszene mit einem Schäfer im hellblauen Hemd, mit seinem Hund eine Schafherde vorantreibend, Aquarell, ca. 17 x 27 cm, r. u. sign., unter P.p. alt gerahmt Anton Mauve wurde anfänglich als Maler von Tierszenen, vor allem als Schafmaler, bekannt, malte später jedoch verstärkt Landschaftsbilder sowie Szenen mit arbeitenden Menschen oder Menschen bei Freizeitaktivitäten. Von 1854 bis 1857 ging er bei dem Tiermaler Pieter Frederik van Os (1808-1892) in die Lehre. Dort wurden Tiere (besonders Schafe, aber auch Kühe und Pferde) Mauves bevorzugtes Thema. Mit Willem Maris und Hendrik Willem Mesdag gründete Anton Mauve 1876 die Hollandsche Teeken-Mantschappij (deutsch: Holländische Zeichengesellschaft. Bereits seit 1882 verbrachte er regelmäßig seine Zeit in Laren in Noord-Holland, wo er neben den von ihm weiterhin gesuchten Schafsherden weitere Motive für seine Landschaftsdarstellungen fand. 1885 zog er dorthin und etablierte eine weitere Künstlergruppe, die als Schule von Laren bekannt wurde; aufgrund seiner Aktivitäten dort wurde die Landschaft von Laren später auch als „das Land Mauves“ bezeichnet. Gerade seine dort entstandenen Bilder mit Schafherden als Motiv erlangten große Bekanntheit und wurden international bis in die Vereinigten Staaten nachgefragt. Together with Willem Maris and Hendrik Willem Mesdag, Anton Mauve founded the Hollandsche Teeken-Mantschappij (Dutch Drawing Society) in 1876. As early as 1882 he regularly spent time in Laren in Noord-Holland, where he found further motifs for his landscape depictions in addition to the flocks of sheep he continued to seek. In 1885 he moved there and established another group of artists, which became known as the School of Laren; because of his activities there, the landscape of Laren was later also called "the land of Mauves". It was his paintings there with flocks of sheep as a motif that achieved great fame and were in demand internationally as far away as the United States.
