Henriette Mabel May Sold at Auction Prices

Figure painter, Painter, Landscape painter, b. 1884 - d. 1971

(born 1884 Montreal, Quebec; died 1971 Burnaby, British Columbia) Canadian painter. Henrietta Mabel May studied art under the tutelage of William Brymner at the Art Association of Montreal from 1909-1912. Afterwards she traveled to Paris where she became influenced by the work of the Impressionists. She was already receiving considerable attention in Canada when the National Gallery of Canada purchased one of her paintings in 1913 and another three in the years shortly afterward. In 1916 she became an associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. In 1920 she was one of the founding members of the Beaver Hall Group, a group of women and men that rented out studio and exhibition space together. Naming their group after the address of their rented space, the group was only in existence for 2 years; ending around 1922 due to lack of money. However the members of the Beaver Hall Group, particularly the women, remained in contact with each other beyond the group’s active years. In 1924 May painted with A.Y. Jackson, the president of their group as well as a member of the Group of Seven. Jackson proved highly influential to May’s style, seen in the bolder, brighter colors and emphasized curves of her landscapes. In 1933 May became a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters and in 1938 she was a supervisor of children’s classes at the National Gallery of Canada. In 1950 she retired in Vancouver, where they held a retrospective of her work and a sale of 100 of her works.

According to Evelyn Walters, art critic Albert Laberge of La Presse “placed her in the highest ranks of Montreal painters and praised her powerful originality...” Over time, her work became increasingly simplified in colour. An affiliation with a religious organization may account for this as Walter’s notes: “One of its tenets was that colours had spiritual significance. It is thought that she may have avoided strong colours like black and dark red because they were deemed to have a negative effect.”Estimate: $10,000–15,000

Following this, she and fellow artist Emily Coonan undertook further studies abroad and were inspired by the works of the Impressionists. The Summer Party is a reflection of this inspiration. In the 1920s, May painted in New England, Baie St. Paul near the Lower St. Lawrence, and in Hudson, Quebec, where her family kept a cottage until the Depression. The Summer Party likely captures an afternoon in Hudson along the banks of the lower Ottawa River. In the decade that followed, May's painting became markedly darker, making The Summer Party a brilliant vestige of her early career.

She painted with her friends in the Eastern Townships, New England, and Baie St. Paul in the Lower St. Lawrence area...In 1929 May received honourable mention in the National Gallery's prestigious William Arts Competition...Her mature works become increasingly more linear, rhythmical and simplified in colour."A 1939 Ottawa Citizen review of a solo exhibition of May's work at James Wilson and Co. remarks: "Miss May is interested in form and rhythm perspective rather than in the more external manifestations of nature. There is a sweep to most of her landscapes and a skilful arrangement of mass and colour. Some are somber in tone and others are bright, but all have a notable unity in conception and manage to suggest the essential nature of the scenes depicted."

In 1920, she was a founding member of the Beaver Hall Group in Montreal, among whose members were other modernist women painters. May was also an educator, and in 1945 was based in Ottawa, teaching art classes at Elmwood School. This superb Quebec watercolour reveals the influence of the Group of Seven, recalling Franklin Carmichael's exceptional watercolours, such as his high views in La Cloche over Grace Lake. May shows a fine sensitivity for mass in the rhythmic layers of land, and a firm command of colour - contrasting her cool and ethereal palette of smokey blues and greens with pink, beige and touches of orange. This striking panorama also has an unfinished landscape on verso.

Henrietta Mabel May 1877 - 1971 Canadian oil on canvas Cottage with Clothesline 18 x 22 inches 45.7 x 55.9 centimeters Provenance:A gift from the Artist to a Private Collector, Ontario By descent within the family of the above Private Collection, Toronto For Mabel May, the Quebec countryside was a favoured subject, and her style is noted for its vigour, rhythm and bold use of colour. Her artistic development began with classes at the Art Association of Montreal, followed by a 1912 trip to Europe which brought the influence of the French Impressionists into her early work. Recognition came when the National Gallery of Canada began to collect her work in 1913, and the Canadian War Memorial Fund engaged her to paint women in munitions factories. In 1920, she became a founding member of the Beaver Hall Group. After this time, her work showed the influence of the Group of Seven, and she participated in their 1928 and 1930 to 1931 exhibitions. Her work became known internationally, most notably through the British Empire Exhibition in 1924 to 1925 and 1938's A Century of Canadian Art at the Tate Gallery in London, contributing to May's significance as a groundbreaking early twentieth century female artist in Canada. Cottage with Clothesline, with its dazzling contrast between brilliant whites and greens and the darkness of rooftops, trees and shadows, is an outstanding canvas.

Prakash, Independent Spirit: Early Canadian Women Artists, Richmond Hill, Ontario, 2008, page 87, for a reproduction of "The Regatta" (1913-1914).Note: May's artistic training began in 1902 at the Art Association of Montreal where she studied under William Brymner. By 1913, May had already travelled France, England, Holland and Belgium to study and paint. Evelyn Walters notes of May's paintings: "It is thought that [May] avoided strong darks like black and red because they were deemed to have a negative effect." In Montreal, however, May departs from the softer, Impressionist style that dominated her early works such as "The Regatta" (1913-1914) by introducing thicker, curving brushwork and bold colouring reminiscent of the works of once Beaver Hall Group president, A.Y. Jackson. It was in 1933, the year during which this work was completed, that May participated in the founding of the influential art society, the Canadian Group of Painters.

Henrietta Mabel May 1877 - 1971 Canadian oil on canvas Late Winter, Lower St. Lawrence 22 x 27 inches 55.9 x 68.6 centimeters signed and on verso titled on a gallery label Provenance:Dominion Gallery, Montreal Wallack Galleries, Ottawa Kaspar Gallery, Toronto Private Collection, Vancouver Initially, Mabel May's painting was influenced by the Impressionist works she saw while traveling in Europe. However, inspired by the Group of Seven's landscape paintings, May's interests shifted, and following 1925 the majority of her works were of Canada's beloved natural backdrop. In 1924, May began painting with Clarence Gagnon, Edwin Holgate and A.Y. Jackson in the Baie-Saint-Paul region of Quebec. The effect of the Group is undeniable in Late Winter, Lower St. Lawrence. May's choice of palette is evocative of Lawren Harris and Frederick Varley's Arctic paintings, and her sense of rhythm is reminiscent of A.Y. Jackson's rolling hills. May's use of a bolder palette marked a departure from the softer hues that she used in her early impressionistic works, with exquisite shades of blue ranging from turquoise to cobalt. The reflection of the mountains in the calm water deftly captures the stillness, and one can sense the sublime feeling that the artist must have felt while experiencing this late winter day on the St. Lawrence.

While traveling, May found her inspiration in the canvases of the French Impressionists. Paul Duval writes, "For a decade after her return to Montreal, May's canvases exhibited a sensitive, even tender, Impressionist style, executed with a confident and relaxed technique," as demonstrated in Entrance to the Garden. This beautiful canvas depicts a mother and two girls, softly bathed in light, entering a garden. The mother's white dress gently billows in the wind, while just outside the gate another mother and daughter wait. May has captured them at the exact moment when they peer into the garden to gaze upon the flora. This delightful painting demonstrates her interest in integrating her subject into the natural environment. It was not until 1925 that May started to focus specifically on landscape painting, rather than people, under the influence of the Group of Seven.
