Brest, 1805 - 1890 Battaglia tra il Bellona e il Lord Nelson Firmato E Mayer e data in basso a sinistra Olio su tela, cm 82X92 Provenienza: Milano, collezione privata Auguste Étienne François Mayer si specializzò nelle scene navali, concentrandosi soprattutto sulle scene di battaglia e sui porti. Iniziò a esporre le sue opere in mostre private e pubbliche già nel 1824. Partecipò a diverse spedizioni artiche, riflettendo poi le sue esperienze e impressioni nella sua arte. Viaggiò ampiamente in luoghi come la Turchia, l'Egitto, i Paesi Bassi e la Svezia, ma divenne celebre per i suoi dipinti raffiguranti il Bosforo. Mayer ricevette la nomina a professore e insegnò disegno all'École Navale. Due delle sue opere più celebri, La battaglia di Trafalgar e La battaglia di Navarine, sono conservate nel Musée de la Marine a Parigi. Inoltre, un'opera con lo stesso soggetto del dipinto presente in catalogo è conservata nel Museo delle Belle Arti di Brest.

He specialised in naval scenes, particularly battle scenes and harbours and started exhibiting his works in private and public exhibitions in 1824. He participated in several arctic expeditions and reflected his impressions in his art. He travelled extensively to Turkey, Egypt, the Netherlands and Sweden but was particularly celebrated for his paintings depicting a fountain on the shores of the Bosphorus, exhibited in 1844. Mayer was appointed professor and taught drawing at the École Navale. His celebrated works The Trafalgar Battle and The Navarine Battle is housed in the Musée de la Marine, Paris.

Antarctica.- Mayer (Attributed to Auguste Etienne Francois, French painter who participated in several Arctic expeditions, 1805-1890) Astrolable, the French ship under the command of Jules Dumont d'Urville (1790-1842), caught in pack ice in Antarctica, pen and black ink, watercolour, heightened with white, sheet 305 x 245 mm. (12 x 9 5/8 in), laid onto card mount with erroneous later inscription below that reads 'The Isabella + Alexander in Baffins Bay 1819, Captain Ross [?] Peary', some browning and surface dirt, unframed, [circa 1838]. ⁂ A typed label from a previous frame included with the watercolour records that 'Admiral Sir Lane Poole tells me [J. Stevens-Cox] a Print of this original water colour is in the Macpherson collection'; the print mentioned is the lithograph by Mayer 'Les corvettes l'Astrolabe et la Zelee, commandees par Dumont-Durville et Jacquinot, la corvette l'Astrolabe est arretee par une glace a la sortie de la banquise, parages antarctiques, 9 Fevrier 1838', which was published by Gambart Junin & Co., circa 1841. Mayer's lithograph features a wider composition than the present watercolour with more details to each side, but it is possible that the watercolour has been slightly trimmed.
